My CUSAT CAT rank is 1897,will I get Mechanical in the main campus?

AS

Your CUSAT CAT rank is decent. You’ll need to wait patiently in the counseling process. You have a high chance of being called for counseling. You might need to stick to Mechanical as your first option until the third shortlist is out.

The next thing you should be careful about is that of choosing the lower options. The reason behind this step is that sometimes you will be selected for your lower options and might get a chance to upgrade to Mechanical although there is no surety for this to happen at all times. So, choose branches like IT, civil as your lower options carefully based on your preferences. Keep your hopes high patiently and wait for the allotment positively.

A word of advice, if you are getting admission for Mechanical Engineering at any other colleges, go for it. Rather than waiting around for the opportunity to get Mechanical at CUSAT. The institute does not have a good placement record for Mechanical. You will most likely get recruited by IT firms after the completion of the course. And to get core companies you will need to score well in GATE.

Mechanical undergraduate at Cochin University of Science and Technology

PES University is a private university and has four campuses, offering various courses under different streams. The university has been recognized by AIU, AICTE, and UGC. The college has been ranked 26th and 43rd for MBA by Times and Outlook respectively.

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), is a state university and is recognized by AIU, AICTE, UGC. The college is ranked 89th by NIRFunder the category of overall universities.

Admission Procedure:

PES: The college offers 97 courses across 11 streams.

  • The fees vary from 1.28 Lakhs to 13.21 Lakhs across various courses.

  • The college grants admission to students on the basis of aggregate scores obtained in previous qualifying examinations and PESSAT, the common entrance test conducted by the university.

  • The college also accepts scores of national level entrance exams (CAT, JEE, XAT, etc.). The institute also conducts personal interviews for some postgraduate courses.

CUSAT: The university has 21 centers and 31 departments, offering a total of 71 courses.

  • The fees vary from Rs 38,500 to 3.23 Lakhs across various courses.

  • The minimum eligibility criteria for all courses is having passed their 10+2 examinations/ graduate degree with a minimum of 50%.

  • For admissions, the university conducts a common admission test CUSAT, Lateral Entry Test, or Departmental Admission Test. The university also accepts CAT, MAT, and GATE scores.

Infrastructure & Facilities:

PES: The college is built over a large 25-acre campus. It is home to a handy library with a collection of e-journals, coursebooks, and e-books.

  • The college has in-campus hostels for both boys and girls. The campus also has various sporting facilities such as cricket, football, and basketball.

  • The college has a number of laboratories for different departments and a moot court for law students. A number of other facilities such as cafeterias, a gym, medical facilities, and auditoriums are also available.

CUSAT: The college is built over a 180-acre campus. The campus has a well-equipped library for its students.

  • The college has separate hostels for boys and girls, with a total of 1300 beds available.

  • The college also provides a café, auditorium, sports facilities, bank, computer lab, and medical facilities.

Placements:

PES:

  • In 2019, 56 companies visited the campus which included Amazon, IBM, Microsoft, and EY.

  • A total of 861 offers were made to the students.

  • The average package offered at the college is 6.8 LPA and the highest package went up to 48 LPA.

CUSAT:

  • A total of 105 recruiters come for placements including Amazon, Cisco, Verizon, and Infosys.

  • The average package offer was 4.94 LPA, with the highest offered package going up to 18 LPA

Both colleges outshine one another on different fronts. While CUSAT has a more economical fee structure and a much larger campus. PES on the other hand scores better on the parameters of facilities and placements provided by the college. However, CUSAT is ranked much higher than PES in terms of college rankings and makes it a better option. The choice between the two colleges also depends on your preference between a private and a state-run university.

How is the CUSAT ranking, cutoff, and placement for a B.Tech 4 year?

RS
Rishabh Singh Posted On : February 23rd, 2024
Lives in banglore

CUSAT is ranked 63rd in the overall college rankings of NIRF for 2023. It has two colleges for B.Tech. One of them is SOE i.e. School of Engineering in Kochi City, and the other is CUCEK i.e. Cochin University College of Engineering in Pulinkunnu. It is a village roughly 100 km away from SOE.

The cutoff varies from year to year. My brother’s rank was 3129. He got Civil in SOE, a few years back. For CS/IT, you’ll need at least a rank >1000. The placements are decent for CS/IT and Safety & Fire graduates.

The average package for these streams is 3 LPA, and the highest package is around 20 LPA. Amazon sometimes visits the campus to make recruitments. The placements are in a poor condition for other branches. Moreover, the CUCEK campus lacks lab facilities for Civil and Mechanical.

Overall, CUSAT is a decent choice for B.Tech, but it lags behind in terms of placements and facilities for non CS/IT branches.

Which is better: CUSAT or JNTU Hyderabad?

SG
Sudesna Ghose Posted On : June 10th, 2021
Former Student at Cochin University Of Science and Technology (2016-2020)

CUSAT and JNTU Hyderabad, both the colleges are good. I have few friends at both, so I can give you some insight into them.

  • JNTU Hyderabad is a reputed institute. According to the placement report which is given by the college companies like TCS, Wipro, cognizant, etc visits the campus.
  • CUSAT is a better choice than JNTU Hyderabad. As in CUSAT, you would get a lot of exposure. The facilities are up to the mark even though it is not much of a luxurious college.
  • You will get a proper atmosphere to learn and as far as the study is concerned you will get adequate material here for study purposes. The library facilities are good and it is quite large. You will also get adequate facilities for games and sports.
  • The campus placement of CUSAT also holds a better record than that of JNTU Hyderabad. For better placement, you have to work hard and pass the exams. As the syllabus and whole curriculum are a bit tougher than that of JNTU Hyderabad. Also, the ranking of CUSAT is higher than that of JNTU Hyderabad.

So, it’s better to go for CUSAT.

What can I do after doing an integrated M.Sc in photonics at CUSAT?

SJ
Shekhar Jha Posted On : July 20th, 2021
M.Sc. Photonics, University of Madras (2018)

There are two options that you can pursue after an integrated M.Sc in photonics at CUSAT.

Industry Jobs - The jobs offered by the photonics industry of India are mostly sales. Yes, there are jobs in the telecommunications industry especially in the fiber optics sector which could fetch you some very good technical roles as well.

Research - Photonics is one of the very interesting topics to research upon. The field offers some very good opportunities in India as well as abroad. However, very few educational institutions in India have a photonics department and they also prefer physics students when they hire their professors. So getting a teaching job may also become difficult.

Anyway, if you are really interested in the subject then nothing should come between your choice because opportunities will appear over time.

The placement opportunities are good enough for B.Tech IT students at CUSAT. The main requirement is a good CGPA in all first 6 semesters of the degree, a good coding knowledge, and soft skills like communication.

You can acquire soft skills by participating in extracurricular activities during your degree. Infosys, Oracle, Amazon, Microsoft, TCS Digital, Nissan Digital, Envestnet, Unisys and IBM are some of the companies that recruit IT students from the CUSAT campus.

How and what should I prepare for CUSAT GDPI (law)?

PG
Pragati Ghosh Posted On : July 28th, 2021
Studied at Cochin University of Science and Technology (2018)

GD-PI round is conducted to test your personality and communication skills. I also prepared for CUSAT during my college days, I might be able to help you with your question.

  • You can improve your communication skills by speaking in front of a mirror.
  • Reading newspapers, discussing current topics with your friends and families will keep you updated with the recent happenings and trends.
  • Your debating skills should be good.
  • If someone tries to suppress your point you should be able to express yourself and highlight the important points in the discussions. This will make you stand out.
  • Search various GD topics on the internet.
  • You should also prepare yourself with some academic questions like “why do you want to study law” and “why do you want to join CUSAT”, etc.
  • Whatever you say, you should be confident enough to express your points.
  • Your approach for presenting the point should be factual and creative.
  • Reading various kinds of news articles in the newspaper will help you a lot.

These are some of the things I did while preparing for my GD-PI session. Just be confident and express your points thoroughly.

Is CUSAT better than SRM for placement purposes?

AD
Aditi Deshpande Posted On : February 23rd, 2024

CUSAT is not a good option for core branches i.e. Mechanical, Civil, ECE or EEE. I am saying this out of personal experience. No core companies visit for Civil placements, and hardly 1-2 companies visit for Mechanical.

SRM gives its students the opportunity to sit for core companies like L&T. At CUSAT, core branch students are ultimately forced to sit for mass recruiters like BYJU’s, Wipro or TCS, or to try for off campus placements or competitive exams. But for CS/IT, Safety and Fire, and Ship Tech, CUSAT is a good option. The placements for these branches are quite good at the college.

CUSAT is a great option for its flagship courses, but if you want to study a core branch, choose SRM University.

Which branch should I opt from the CUSAT, mechanical engineering or safety and fire engineering?

PS
Praduman Singh Posted On : July 20th, 2021
B.Tech in Safety & Fire Engg from Cochin University Of Science and Technology (2020)

It depends where your interest lies. But if you think according to the placement opportunities, safety, and fire engineering is much more preferred due to the high demand in the industry. The faculty is also well-qualified along with the quality education that the college provides. But safety and fire engineering deal with a lot of safety responsibilities so, if you are opting for this branch be prepared for that.

However, if you don’t want to be confined in one specific area then go for Mechanical. As it is a core branch, you can get many specializations later.

So, choose a branch according to your interest.

As per the eligibility criteria for B.Tech programs at CUSAT, the applicants must have cleared their +2 from a recognized board/university with 60% overall. They must have taken Physics, Chemistry and Maths in their 11th and 12th, and scored at least 50% in Maths. They must have also attained 50% in their Physics, Chemistry and Maths scores put together.

This eligibility criteria applies to you as well. Certain communities from Kerala are provided relaxation, but this does not apply to students from outside Kerala.
