studied at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata (2018)

Students who get admission for Int-PhD in Physics at institutes like IISc, IISER Pune, or IISER Kolkata score decent marks in IIT-JAM. You should have a rank under 300 if you want admission at IISc. The required cutoff for IISER Pune remains under 500. For IISER Kolkata, you will need a rank under 700.

Here is an interview experience shared by a senior researcher at IISER

What is the daily schedule of IISC Bangalore MS students?

SS
Shlok Sharma Posted On : February 8th, 2024
Studied at IISc Bangalore

The schedule is more or less the same for all postgraduate students at IISc.

Some are night owls, while others wake up early each morning. The mess opens between 7:30-9:30 am for breakfast. The classes commence at 8, and run till late the afternoon. So the early risers are the ones who eat their breakfast in the mess.

The schedule of postgraduates is quite hectic over here. Most of them work in the labs till night, after their classes. The canteen of IISc Bangalore is called Prakruti. It is where you’ll find students and professors enjoying their evening tea. It is also the place where geniuses sit and think upon mathematical problems.

Those who finish their work early opt for some outdoor activities in the evening. They play Hockey, TT, Lawn Tennis and Basketball in the Gymkhana. You can even find some professors over there. At night, some postgraduates go for night strolls post dinner, while others are busy working in the labs. Unlike the rest of the city that sleeps after 11pm, the IISc campus is awake at all hours.

This question does not have a single answer, so I tried answering for every kind of postgraduate student on this campus.

Should I join IISC or JNCASR for integrated MSC-PHD in biology?

SA
Seenu Arora Posted On : November 5th, 2022
Int. Ph.D. in Genetics and Molecular Biology, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research.

Both are excellent institutions, but the experience will differ between the two. Whereas IISc is much larger and has a more vibrant student community, the smaller batches in JNCASR allow for more attention and a better chance of getting into at least one of their preferred labs.

IISC is smack dab in the middle of a commercial area (well, actually, the commercial areas grew around IISc, but let's not get into that). JNCASR is less centrally located and more of a sleepy campus. It's a completely different story after the second year when the pressure is intense and lab work can be extremely demanding.

There are no holidays for students (not even Sundays or national holidays like the 15th of August or the 26th of January, but there is a flag hoisting event so you get off work for at least an hour) and most P.I.s do not allow paid leave of more than two weeks per year. This is not to say that there isn't any fun on campus. Most of the rules governing on-campus life are lax, and the guards and staff are laid-back and don't make a fuss when asked to overlook a few things.

Which one is better: IISC Bengaluru BS Programme or IIT Delhi Engineering Physics? Why?

DS
Deeraj Shah Posted On : April 10th, 2023
M.Tech from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (2020)

IISc Bengaluru’s BS Program is still in its infancy but has great scope for development in the near future. In fact, I consider this program even better than the Engineering Physics offered at IIT Delhi. A few strong reasons support my stance on the same area:

  • IISc program curriculum is very flexible and students are at the freedom to opt for any course of their choice provided that they have completed the first year m’s highly dynamic course. Whereas IIT Delhi's EG program has little flexibility as you will be studying physics-related courses throughout the program with little space to choose a different topic
  • Globally, IISc is a well-reputed science institute, and its scientific research and teaching methodology are even better than IIT Delhi.
  • The professors of IISc Bangalore are more experienced and learned than IIT Delhi and their unique pedagogy offers a great learning experience. These professors enjoy worldwide recognition and thus their recommendations are highly valued
  • For someone who is interested in Academics more than jobs, IISc is a very good option. It holds the 35th position globally for providing jobs.

Despite being a new course, I will highly recommend you to go for it owing to the tremendous scope of development it has.

Which should I join IIT Kharagpur aerospace engineering or IISC?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : March 28th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

While the Aerospace department of IIT Kharagpur is indeed well developed, IISc is still the best option for Aerospace in India. It has multiple collaborations with reputed Aircraft Manufacturing companies like Boeing and Airbus offering you the necessary exposure that might not be possible at IIT KGP. You can get an insight into the working of these companies and learn things quickly.

You can even apply to the foreign branches of these companies and get a good job. IISc is well known for its enthusiastic research-oriented approach and learned faculty that will help you grow as a person.

Being a knowledgeable person does necessarily mean you have to secure full marks. Knowing the right set of skills and implementing them is a must to be one of the top students.

That being said, to achieve great things you cannot expect your journey to be a cakewalk. The workload at IISc is indeed much more than IIT Kharagpur. You will face continuous challenges as you stay in the dynamic research environment which will eventually become a thrilling experience. Going for IISc will definitely guarantee you a good career ahead.

Which should I choose, IISC (ME in signal processing), IITB SysCon or NITIE PGDIE?

AA
Ajita Anand Posted On : August 13th, 2021
PGDPM from National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2019)

It is best to either secure a job either at a government-run organization, PSU, or go for NITIE. You can opt for either option.

You need to obtain the best offer at the end of the day, and securing a position in the job sector might be a good decision. Apart from that, if you do not share a valuable amount of interest in the PSU, then joining NITIE Mumbai might be the best option for you.

You will get the chance to witness several big firms visiting the campus, alongside the addition of value to your profile and simultaneous growth. In terms of the technical courses, you should definitely research more about them, as per your requirements.
