I am a second year student studying in NIT Raipur in the IT branch. What topic should I focus more on so that I get a good position at an IT company?
Second year is the most suitable time for you to develop your skills and knowledge. Here are some tips for you-
- Learning coding. Become an expert in at least one programming language. Learn and understand coding concepts from geeksforgeeks. Practice coding from codechef.
- Understand the concept of data structures and its implementation.
- Practice aptitude questions.
- You need to know Database.
- You need to have conceptual knowledge of operating systems.
- Through geeksforgeeks and codechef, cover algorithms and oops.
- Do internships, engage in projects. Companies will prioritize experience over grades during placements. Approach companies for internships and projects.
- As an intern, you’ll gain a lot of experience and confidence from the corporate world.
If you follow these tips, getting placed at a good IT firm during NIT Raipur placement season will become much easier for you.
How is mining engineering at NIT Raipur? Is it worth joining?
I am a student of Mining at NIT Raipur. Based on my experiences, I will share some pros and cons of this branch at my college-
Cons-
- The curriculum is outdated.
- The faculty for mining isn’t good, barring very few teachers. You’ll have to rely solely on self study. Also, textbooks aren’t available for most subjects, so you’ll have to study from the ppts/pdfs provided by teachers.
- Campus placement is very low in core jobs.
- The college has poor infrastructure. It has poor sports facilities, and limited accommodation in hostels and the college auditorium.
- Most mining students don’t have any interest in their branch. Their aim is to crack the CAT/UPSC exam.
Pros-
- Getting up to 40-50% marks in end semester exams isn’t really difficult. It can be achieved by studying for just 2 days before each exam.
- You’ll get ample time to participate in college fest, and to explore your interests.
B.Tech Mining Engineering from NIT Raipur is the right choice if you wish to graduate with minimal efforts. Otherwise, I won’t suggest this branch at my college.
Which is better EEE at NIT Raipur or BIT Mesra or NIT Hamirpur?
When I asked a senior of mine the same question, she told me to exclude NIT Raipur. The reason is, NIT Raipur is one of the newer institutes and to be considered worthy, the institute has to improve a lot.
The other two institutes, however, would be a tough call.
My senior said BIT Mesra is slightly ahead of NIT Hamirpur just because the former has been around for much longer than the latter.
Despite all that, NIT Hamirpur is located in pleasant surroundings. In addition to that, it will also give you the NIT tag and is an INI. So, in the case of comparison by merit, it all depends on who has the higher cut-off in a particular session.
NIT Hamirpur is also a new NIT and it is improving with each day. On the other hand, the quality of education, placements in the electrical branch of NIT Raipur are going down with each passing day.
Is NIT Raipur better than NIT Silchar?
Here are various factors on which one can compare these two institutions-
- Placements- NIT Raipur offers better placements for CSE/IT/core branches. This is because of its advantageous location. It is located near IIT Bhilai, increasing its chances of being visited by good companies.
- Connectivity- As compared to Silchar, Raipur is better connected to the rest of the country.
- Campus- NIT Silchar has a lush green campus. NIT Raipur lags behind in terms of campus facilities and hostel accommodation. This is because it was built much before.
- Ranking- As per the NIRF 2023 Engineering rankings, NIT Raipur stands at 70th position. On the other hand, NIT Silchar stands at 40th position. This can be attributed to NIT Silchar’s better campus and hostel facilities.
Both the colleges have their own strengths and weaknesses. You should choose based on your own priorities. Also, the choice should be based on what branch you are getting at both.
How do I be a 9 pointer at NIT Raipur?
One of my seniors who graduated from NIT Raipur says that to be a 9 pointer at NIT Raipur is not that big of a deal.
She said to keep the following in mind:
- It is up to you to analyze what you want to study and what to leave. This can be done with a little bit of ease by interacting with teachers about the syllabus and discussing it with your peers and seniors.
- Sometimes the previous years’ question papers are partially repeated.
- CTs are highly instrumental in determining your pointer. There are 120 marks for each subject, of which 30 are from CT and 20 from TA.
- TA depends on the marks of your CT. Other determining factors are your attendance and when you are submitting your assignments.
- CTs are difficult but end semesters are easy to crack, provided you are well prepared.
You can also get a decent pointer, say 8.5+, even if you are not interested. You will stand a chance to get internships in IITs, NITs, admission to MBA colleges, also opportunities to study abroad.
Getting a pointer just for the sake of it might be advantageous but gaining fundamental knowledge about your subjects will definitely have its perks.
At the end of the day, it comes to passion. If you are passionate enough, your pointer will have little impact. There is no substitute for hard work.
How are the placements in CSE at NIT Raipur?
NIT Raipur offers good placements for the CSE branch. Each year around 95% of students get placed. Here are the recent highlights of NIT Raipur placements for the CSE branch.

Which one is better placement-wise, IT in NIT Raipur or civil in NIT Rourkela?
In this era of IT, it would be an exaggeration to say that the IT/CSE branches offer much better job opportunities and growth than core branches like Civil. Moreover, one should always prioritize the branch over the brand of the college. No doubt, NIT Rourkela is a better-ranked NIT than NIT Raipur, but its Civil department is not as good as the IT department of NIT Raipur. You should consider the following points before making the final decision
- If you are after placements only then IT is the better option because Civil being a core branch has fewer job opportunities and a low average package.
- What matters more to you, the branch or the brand?
- If you go for Civil you will have GATE opportunities whereas this might not be possible if you take IT.
Ultimately, if you want excellent packages, go for NIT Raipur IT, but if you want a core branch, job safety, and better infrastructure, then choose NIT Rourkela.
Should I choose NIT Trichy metallurgy over NIT Raipur ECE?
My friend is currently pursuing B.Tech from NIT Raipur in the mechanical department. His honest opinion says that you should go for metallurgy at NIT Trichy. Here’s why
- If you went for the wrong branch or found out later that this is not your cup of tea, then after the 1st year you will have an option called branch sliding. In this process, you can change your branch from the current one to the desired one based upon the number of vacancies and score.
- If you went for the wrong college, then there's no option as a college slide! You’ll have to devote your 4 years in that college anyhow, except if you again decide to give mains.
So, if you simply want to get into a better place then choose NIT Trichy. This is because you can get the advantage of branch sliding anyhow. However, if you don’t want to take risk of not getting the desired branch, then go for NIT Raipur.
At last, sort your preferences and know your sole aim. Because in the long run, your happiness and satisfaction are what matters the most!
Can I get into NIT Raipur (CSE) with 84.7% if I belong to the ST category?
With 84.7%, you have a good chance of getting NIT Raipur CSE. The chance is higher if you belong to the home state quota. Apply for CSE and wait till the last round of counseling. NIT Raipur offers a branch slide option as well. If you don’t get CSE through counseling. You can apply for branch change after the completion of the first year.
