IIM Visakhapatnam Plans to Modernise its PhD Framework

New Delhi: IIM Visakhapatnam is planning to align its PhD course structure with the global norm and reduce the course duration to one year. This change in course duration aims to intensify research focus, encourage collaboration and exchanges with different universities.

As per IIM Visakhapatnam, a Thesis Advisory Committee will be introduced which will emphasise research. The institute also collaborates with Monash University Malaysia to foster advanced research and contribute to knowledge and enhance the research ecosystem.

IIM Visakhapatnam contemplates revamping the PhD course framework to enhance the PhD course framework to align with global educational practices. Although the course duration of the PhD program in International Universities is one year, this program at IIMV is of two years.

This shift in coursework aims to facilitate greater international Collaboration and initiative and introduce intensive research among students. IIMV has signed multiple MoU with various global universities including the partnership with Monash University Malaysia.

The Institute has recently introduced an advancement in the Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) and placed it in the second year of the PhD program instead of the previous third-year practice. This step gave more emphasis on the research within the scholar community.

IIM Visakhapatnam's Director, Prof M Chandrasekhar inaugurated its first batch of PhD students in 2019 and said that "The program has been designed in such a way to contribute to the current body of knowledge, with a focus on both conceptual and applied knowledge”.

“We have so far admitted 17 students in different specialisations like decision sciences, finance and accounting, production and operations management, organisational behaviour and human resource management, etc. We have limited the PhD intake. The Institute has designed a rigorous selection process to admit only those who have the potential to excel in advanced research and make a significant scholarly contribution”, he added.
