Colleges in Kolkata May Reopen To Fill Up Vacant Seats

New Delhi: Several universities in Kolkata intend to reopen their application site in order to fill open seats in subjects where enrollment has been low even after two or three rounds of admission.

Some colleges, like Maharaja Manindra Chandra College, Vidyasagar College, Basanti Devi College, New Alipore College, and AJC Bose College, have already decided to accept applications for a second round for courses like Economics, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

The state higher education authority has given colleges permission to reopen their entrance portal twice this year in order to fill available seats. The application process must be completed by July 31, 2023.

While the admissions portal for AJC Bose College reopened on July 26, 2023 and will be active till July 31, 2023, the portal for Maharaja Manindra Chandra College is active for three days starting from July 27, 2023.

The admissions site for Sanskrit, Philosophy, Economics, Anthropology, and Botany (for students from the reserved category) was reopened by New Alipore College on July 26, 2023 for two days. The Basanti Devi College applications website reopened on July 27, 2023 for two days of registration in five subjects.

Surendranath College has chosen to seek new applications for Bengali, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Economics, Physics, and BSc general, whereas Vidyasagar College would do the same for BSc general, geography general, sanskrit, philosophy, and even core science disciplines if necessary.

According to a previous article from TOI, this year has seen a general decline in interest in fundamental science topics like physics, chemistry, and maths as well as humanities courses like sanskrit and philosophy.

Purnachandra Maity, the principal of AJC Bose College, stated that admission had to be reopened for nearly all science courses since "in physics, only 12 of the 70 seats have been occupied. Likewise, only 15 of 81 places in mathematics and 6 of 55 seats in chemistry have been filled. We have reopened the gateway for Hindi and these topics, the speaker added.

According to Jaydeep Sarandi, the principal of New Alipore College, "this year, subjects like English and zoology are in high demand, but there are several vacant seats in economics, philosophy, and anthropology." There are just six filled seats in economics and three in philosophy.

The decision has not yet been taken to restart the admissions portal for Lady Brabourne College. The college's principal, Siuli Sarkar, said, "We are unaware of how many children will linger behind, but our admittance trend is fairly robust and similar to previous year. Merit-based admissions have been used, and wish lists have been made public. In a few days, we'll be better able to determine whether we need to reopen the admissions site.
