University of Augsburg admissions run on a two-semester cycle for Indian students, with a Bachelor’s requirement of a related degree at German grade 2.70 (roughly 65 to 70 percent) for master’s entry and Class XII with a valid higher education entrance qualification for undergraduate entry. All applications route through the uni-assist portal for Indian degrees before landing on the university’s own VIBS platform.

  • Winter 2027/28 primary intake: restricted-admission (NC) programmes close 15 July 2027, open-admission close 17 September 2027.
  • Tuition: No base tuition for most consecutive master’s; only the semester fee near €150 (around INR 16,505). uni-assist charges a €75 (around INR 8,252) application fee.
  • Eligibility floor: UG needs Class XII plus a valid entrance qualification; PG needs a related Bachelor’s with German grade 2.70 and IELTS 5.5 (B2).
  • Acceptance rate: around 77 percent, one of the more accessible German public universities.

Popular master’s for Indian students include M.Sc. Computer Science, M.Sc. Software Engineering, and M.Sc. Data Science, with student reviews highlighting research access, low costs, and strong Bavarian industry links. For a broader institutional read, see the University of Augsburg overview page.

Admission Status: Open. The Winter 2026/27 open-admission cycle closes today, 17 September 2026. The nearest live window is Summer 2027: Business & Information Systems Engineering closes 15 December 2026, and Computer Science plus Data Science close 15 February 2027, with 1 December 2026 recommended for visa applicants. Applications route through uni-assist (which charges a €75 processing fee, around INR 8,252) and then the university’s VIBS portal. University of Augsburg itself charges no additional application fee.

University of Augsburg Application Deadlines for Indian Students

The University of Augsburg runs two main intakes each year, and per the official international applicants page, dates split by whether the programme has restricted admission (NC), an aptitude assessment, or open admission. Indian applicants must factor in uni-assist’s 6 to 8-week preliminary review documentation (VPD) processing before the actual deadline. The primary intake is Winter Semester (October start), where most programmes open enrolment. Summer intake carries a smaller list of programmes, mainly in computer science, data science, and business informatics.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use EUR 1 = INR 110.03, the live rate on 17 September 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

University of Augsburg Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at Augsburg splits into academic thresholds and language proof. Master’s programmes require a related Bachelor’s, and per program admission pages, most computer science and data science programmes ask for a German grade of 2.70 or better. On the German 1.0 to 4.0 scale, 2.70 maps roughly to 65 to 70 percent in the Indian marking system. If your Bachelor’s is still ongoing, 77 percent of required credits must be complete at application time.

English and German Language Minimums

The uni-wide minimum for English-taught master’s is B2, and the recognised scores per the official admission requirements page are:

  • B2 (most master’s): IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72.
  • C1 (English/American Studies, some humanities): IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 95.
  • German B2: TestDaF 4, DSH-2, or Goethe-Zertifikat B2.
  • German A2 (CS master’s floor): Goethe A2 or equivalent.

University of Augsburg IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

The university accepts a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter in place of IELTS or TOEFL when your Indian Bachelor’s was taught fully in English. Native English speakers and graduates of English-medium universities need no test score. This waiver is stated on the official master’s application page and applies uniformly.

APS Certificate Requirement

All Indian applicants must submit an APS certificate from the German Embassy’s Academic Evaluation Centre before uni-assist processes the VPD. Book the APS interview 8 to 12 weeks before your uni-assist submission.

University of Augsburg PG Programs and English Scores

Most master’s at Augsburg run four semesters. Public master’s charge no tuition in the standard consecutive format; you only pay the semester contribution near €150 (around INR 16,505) each term. Selected specialised master’s do carry tuition, ranging from €1,801 to €22,725 per year (around INR 1.98 Lakhs to INR 25.01 Lakhs), with a common master’s fee near €17,850 per year (around INR 19.64 Lakhs). See the detailed program list on Collegedunia for the fee breakdown by course.

University of Augsburg UG Programs and Requirements

Most Bachelor’s programmes at Augsburg are taught in German, so Indian applicants need German B2 or higher as a floor. Class XII alone from CBSE, ISC, or a state board is not sufficient direct entry; you need one of two paths: (a) complete a Studienkolleg foundation year in Germany, or (b) finish one year of an Indian Bachelor’s programme with acceptable grades before applying.

Planning note: For direct UG entry, book the Feststellungsprüfung (Studienkolleg entrance test) at least 6 months before the 15 July 2027 deadline.

University of Augsburg PhD Pathway for Indian Students

Augsburg does not run a centralised PhD admissions cycle. You apply directly to a professor or research group, secure a supervisor, then formally register your doctorate with the relevant faculty. Doctoral candidates in Computer Science, Physics, and Business often enter through funded research assistant positions or through structured graduate schools.

Augsburg PhD Steps for Indian Applicants

  • Identify a supervisor: Match your research proposal to a chair or working group on the faculty page.
  • Contact the professor: Send a 2-page proposal, CV, transcripts, and a Master’s degree copy.
  • Sign a supervision agreement: Formalise the mentor-student contract before enrolment.
  • Register with the doctoral office: Submit APS certificate, Master’s transcripts, and language proof.

Funding Options for PhD Candidates

PhD funding at Augsburg mostly runs via TV-L E-13 research assistant contracts, which for 2026 pay near €4,150 gross per month (around INR 4.57 Lakhs) at 100 percent, though PhD roles usually run at 50 or 75 percent. External options include DAAD scholarships and DFG-funded research training groups. See the ranking band and research profile for departmental strength before writing to a supervisor.

Augsburg Application Process Step by Step

Applying to Augsburg from India is a two-portal process: uni-assist handles the preliminary review documentation (VPD), and the VIBS portal handles the actual programme application. The end-to-end timeline runs about 12 to 14 weeks from start to admission letter, so plan backward from the deadline.

  1. Book your APS interview: The Academic Evaluation Centre at the German Embassy verifies your Indian degree. Processing takes 3 to 4 weeks.
  2. Create a uni-assist account: Register on the uni-assist portal, upload transcripts, and pay the application fee of €75 (around INR 8,252) for the first programme, €30 (around INR 3,301) for each additional programme.
  3. Receive your VPD: uni-assist issues the preliminary review documentation in 6 to 8 weeks confirming your German grade equivalent.
  4. Register on VIBS: Once VPD arrives, register on Augsburg’s VIBS applicant portal for your specific programme.
  5. Upload programme documents: SOP, LORs, module descriptions, English proof, and any programme-specific forms.
  6. Submit before the deadline: NC and aptitude programmes close 15 July 2027; open admission closes 17 September 2027.
  7. Await the Zulassung (admission letter): Decisions typically arrive 3 to 6 weeks after each submission batch closes.
  8. Apply for the German student visa: After acceptance, book a visa appointment at the German consulate closest to your Indian city.

Insider note: A single uni-assist payment covers preliminary review for all your programme choices in one semester, so bundle Augsburg with 3 to 4 other German universities to spread the fee.

University of Augsburg Documents Required

Indian applicants must submit certified copies and, where the originals are not in German or English, sworn translations. Get certifications from a notary, an Indian embassy officer, or a Sub-Divisional Magistrate before scanning for upload.

  • Valid passport: Copy of the bio page, at least 12 months valid.
  • APS certificate: Original from the German Embassy Delhi.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate: Certified copy, sworn translation if not in English.
  • Bachelor’s transcripts: Full semester-wise marksheets, all years.
  • Class XII and Class X certificates: Certified copies for entrance qualification.
  • English proficiency proof: IELTS or TOEFL score report, or Medium of Instruction letter.
  • German language certificate: If the programme requires German A2, B2, or higher.
  • Statement of Purpose: Programme-specific, one to two pages.
  • Curriculum vitae: Europass or standard format.
  • Two letters of recommendation: Academic references preferred for master’s applicants.
  • Module descriptions: Syllabus of your Bachelor’s courses, needed for CS and engineering master’s.
  • uni-assist VPD: Preliminary review documentation once issued.
  • Passport-size photos: Biometric format for the visa file.

Augsburg Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

The University of Augsburg has an overall acceptance rate near 77 percent, placing it among the more accessible German public universities for international applicants. It follows an access-oriented model, which means it admits most applicants who meet its stated requirements, without a competitive shortlisting overlay on top.

What Drives the 77 Percent Figure

Numerus Clausus (NC) is applied only to a small subset of programmes at Augsburg, mostly humanities and select business tracks. Open-admission programmes let any applicant who clears the eligibility floor in and take the full applicant pool. For Indian applicants, the true filter is often the APS certificate and the German grade conversion via uni-assist.

How Indian Applicants Should Read the Rate

A high acceptance rate does not mean a low bar. Data Science and Software Engineering apply an aptitude assessment on top of the German grade 2.70 floor, so the effective admission rate for those two is lower than the institution-wide 77 percent. Prepare your SOP and interview inputs with the same rigour you would for a competitive uni.

Insider note: The single most common rejection reason for Indian applicants is a missing or inadequate APS certificate at the uni-assist stage — not the German grade.

Germany Student Visa Process for Indian Applicants

After the Augsburg admission letter (Zulassung), Indian students apply for a German Student Visa (Type D national visa) at the VFS Germany centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, or Kolkata. Book the visa slot as soon as the admission letter arrives, since summer slots book out by April.

Financial proof is the biggest single ask. The 2026 blocked account (Sperrkonto) requirement is €11,904 for 12 months (around INR 13.10 Lakhs), released as €992 per month (around INR 1.09 Lakhs) after arrival. Open the blocked account with Fintiba, Expatrio, or Deutsche Bank before your visa appointment. Standard documents include the admission letter, blocked account confirmation, health insurance proof, APS certificate, and academic transcripts. Processing runs 3 to 6 weeks in most cases, and after arrival you register your address (Anmeldung) within 14 days and enrol at the university.

2026 update: Bank transfers to the blocked account often lose €30 to €60 in intermediary charges, so remit near €12,000 (around INR 13.20 Lakhs) to avoid the visa file being flagged for a short deposit.

Tips and Application Checklist for University of Augsburg

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Augsburg. Order these around the primary Winter 2027/28 deadline of 15 July 2027, and read the Indian student reviews for how the programme feels once you land.

  • Book APS 12 weeks before uni-assist submission: The single most cited bottleneck for Indian applicants.
  • Bundle uni-assist choices: Add 3 to 4 German universities in one semester to spread the €75 (around INR 8,252) first-course fee across €30 (around INR 3,301) add-ons.
  • Take IELTS early: Score validity is 2 years; take the test by March 2027 for a Winter 2027/28 application.
  • Request module descriptions: Ask your Indian college for a sealed syllabus copy 6 weeks before deadline; CS and DS programmes ask for it.
  • Attend a German A1 course early: CS master’s needs A2, and free A1 material at your home city Goethe centre saves time later.
  • Start the blocked account 8 weeks before visa: Fintiba activation plus fund transfer takes 3 to 5 weeks.
  • Prepare a research-fit SOP: Cite one Augsburg chair or lab you want to work with.
  • Cross-check the aptitude interview format: Data Science and Software Engineering interviews run over video call, so test your setup.

Augsburg admissions reward planning over polish: the German grade 2.70 floor, an APS certificate, IELTS 5.5 or MOI, and a clean uni-assist submission clear most master’s programmes at the university. Winter 2027/28 opens in April 2027 and closes on staged dates from 15 July to 17 September 2027; Summer 2027 remains live for computer science, data science, and business informatics applicants until 15 February 2027.

Overview

The size, the location, and they have my major. Only 2 schools in Minnesota offer a music Business program and Augsburg just felt right. It's also an ELCA which is what I grew up in. So that was an added bonus on top.

Scholarship

Yes! Our university is 98% financial aid driven which means 98% of students get some sort of financial aid which is incredible! For a sticker price of about $42,000, I'm paying less than $6,000 per semester!
