Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at h_da is set by German equivalence rules through the Anabin database, which grades every Indian degree by recognition status. Indian applicants also need an APS certificate from the German Embassy Delhi before enrolment or a student visa.

  • UG general entry: Class XII from a recognised CBSE, ISC or state board with Anabin H+ status.
  • UG restricted (NC) entry: Class XII around 65 to 75 percent, subject to program grade cutoffs.
  • PG entry: Indian Bachelor’s of at least three or four years with 60% or higher in a subject-relevant field.
  • Studienkolleg path: Applicants whose Indian degree is not Anabin H+ complete a one-year preparatory course.

English proficiency requirements shift by program level and faculty. All figures below are from h_da’s dedicated English language certificate page.

h_da IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Indian applicants can skip the IELTS or TOEFL when they hold a Bachelor’s degree taught fully in English, verified by a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate from the awarding university. Native-speaker exemption applies rarely to Indian applicants. Two Master’s programs, M.Sc. Media, Technology and Society and M.A. International Media Cultural Work, drop the English requirement outright.

German Requirements at h_da

German-taught programs require B2 at application and DSH-2 or equivalent C1 by enrolment. Accepted certificates include DSH-2, TestDaF 4x4, Goethe C1, telc C1, DSD II and OSD C1. English-taught tracks do not require German for admission.

h_da Postgraduate Programs and English Scores

Master’s admissions at h_da run through uni-assist for the standard route, with faculty-specific portals for select international tracks. Tuition is free for every Master’s except the MBA, though the EUR 401 (around INR 44,368) semester base tuition-linked fee still applies per term. Course fee breakdowns sit on our full h_da program list.

Note: MBA specialisation availability and cohort start dates may shift each year. Always confirm on the official Darmstadt MBA page before applying.

Darmstadt University Doctoral Admissions

h_da holds the independent right to award doctorates since 2016 through the state of Hesse, a rare status for a University of Applied Sciences. Doctorates run through Promotionszentren (doctoral centres) covering engineering, IT security, social sciences and applied health.

PhD Entry Requirements

Applicants need a recognised Master’s degree with strong final grades, typically 2.5 on the German scale or better, which maps to roughly 60 to 65 percent in Indian terms. A research proposal aligned to a Promotionszentrum theme and a supervisor’s letter of interest are both required before formal admission.

PhD Funding for Indian Applicants

PhD candidates apply for project positions with a monthly stipend or scholarships such as DAAD Research Grants for doctoral studies. Positions are advertised on the individual Promotionszentrum pages. No tuition is charged; only the semester fee of EUR 401 (around INR 44,368) applies.

h_da Application Process for Indian Students

Indian applicants apply through uni-assist, which runs the document check for every German university before forwarding to h_da’s own portal my.h-da. The MBA skips uni-assist and takes applications directly on my.h-da.

  1. Create a uni-assist account at my.uni-assist.de and start the online application for h_da for the target intake.
  2. Upload certified, translated copies of Class XII certificates, Bachelor’s transcripts, degree certificate, English or German test score, CV, motivation letter and APS certificate.
  3. Pay the application fee of EUR 75 (around INR 8,298) for the first program choice on the uni-assist portal, plus EUR 30 (around INR 3,319) per additional program.
  4. Post the required hard-copy documents to uni-assist Berlin within the deadline window.
  5. Track the Vorpruefungsdokumentation (VPD) result on uni-assist; once released, upload the VPD reference to my.h-da for the final admission decision.
  6. Receive the admission letter, apply for the student visa at the German Embassy Delhi, then enrol in person in Darmstadt.

Admission Decision Timeline

NC (restricted) programs release results in early August for Winter and mid-February for Summer. Free-admission and English-taught Master’s send decisions on a rolling basis, typically within four to eight weeks of a complete file at uni-assist. The MSE Electrical Engineering (International) sends offers by 15 April. Deferrals to the next intake are allowed on written request.

Darmstadt Documents Required for Indian Applicants

Every Indian applicant sends the same base document set through uni-assist, with certified translations into German or English. Missing or uncertified papers trigger a delay of two to six weeks in the VPD check.

  • Passport: Bio-page copy, valid for at least 18 months past the intake start.
  • APS certificate: Mandatory original from the German Embassy Academic Evaluation Centre in Delhi.
  • Class XII certificate and marksheet: Officially certified and translated.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate and consolidated marksheet: With semester-wise transcripts.
  • Bachelor’s syllabus or course description: Required by many engineering Master’s for module mapping.
  • English or German test score report: IELTS, TOEFL, telc, TestDaF or DSH as applicable.
  • CV in Europass format: Preferred for MBA and MSE tracks.
  • Motivation letter and two academic references: Program-specific length limits apply.
  • Work experience letters: Only for MBA applicants, showing at least three years post-Bachelor.
  • Portfolio: For all Animation, Game, AR/VR and Motion Pictures applicants.

Before you apply: Book the APS appointment in Delhi at least three months before the deadline; slots for Indian applicants fill quickly around June and November.

Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences Acceptance Rate

h_da does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Third-party estimates place selectivity around 30 to 40 percent for Bachelor programs, 25 to 35 percent for competitive English-taught Master’s, and higher for the fee-paying MBA, based on cohort intake data patterns.

Which Programs Are Hardest to Get Into?

The M.A. Animation and Game and B.A. Motion Pictures are the tightest by portfolio filter, admitting roughly one in five applicants. The M.Sc. Electrical Engineering (International) is competitive on academic percentage due to a fixed intake size.

What Improves Indian Applicant Odds?

A recognised Anabin H+ Bachelor with 65% or higher, IELTS 6.5+ and a program-aligned motivation letter push above the median cohort profile. Prior German language study to A2 or B1 helps for German-taught tracks.

Insider note: h_da follows the German applied-sciences model, which admits most applicants who meet the stated academic and language floor. Rejections most often come from missing APS or an unrecognised Bachelor.

Germany Student Visa for h_da Applicants

Indian students need the national visa for study purposes (Type D) issued by the German Consulate. Apply after the h_da admission letter arrives, since the visa office requires the original offer.

Financial proof is the blocked account (Sperrkonto) holding EUR 11,904 (around INR 13.17 Lakhs) for one year, plus health insurance from a recognised provider. Visa slots at VFS Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata run 6 to 12 weeks; book right after the admission decision. On arrival in Darmstadt, register at the Buergeramt within two weeks and convert the visa to a residence permit within 90 days.

2026 update: The blocked account minimum was raised to EUR 11,904 in September 2024 and remains the current figure. Confirm the annual update on the Federal Foreign Office site before remitting.

Tips and Checklist for h_da Admissions

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at h_da over recent Winter intakes. Combine early paperwork with the correct portal sequence to avoid the two most common delay traps.

  • Start APS 12 weeks early: Book the Delhi appointment before opening the uni-assist form.
  • Certified translations first: Get German or English notarised copies before the uni-assist submission.
  • Pay the EUR 75 (INR 8,298) fee for one program: Add EUR 30 (INR 3,319) per extra choice only after shortlisting.
  • Send hard copies to Berlin: uni-assist requires posted originals within the deadline; e-mail alone is invalid.
  • Track the VPD: Upload it to my.h-da the day it releases; h_da will not decide without the VPD reference.
  • MBA candidates use my.h-da directly: Skip uni-assist and email mba@h-da.de for the interview slot.
  • Book Sperrkonto and health cover: Complete both before the visa interview at VFS Delhi.
  • Cross-check with peer accounts: Read Indian applicant student reviews for cohort-specific timelines.

h_da’s admission rewards process discipline more than a flashy profile: hit the Anabin, APS and uni-assist steps in the right order, and the tuition-free structure makes it one of the best-value Master’s destinations in Germany for Indian students.

Scholarship

  • There are no scholarships for our college because no tuition fees are taken. In some cases when you are in the final stage of your degree and you are doing your thesis and are not getting paid during your thesis and you are not able to manage your expenses and day-to-day life, you are then eligible to apply for a scholarship for around 400 euros, provided you can prove your situation.
