The Department of Computer Science offers programs of study involving interdepartmental, multi-institutional and inter-institutional collaboration that has attracted faculty members and graduate students from all over the world. Students may pursue full-time or part-time graduate study leading towards MSc and PhD degrees.

The MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Science focus on six main areas of research: artificial intelligence and deep learning; data science and data analytics, human-centred computing and computational media, software engineering; systems, communication, and sybersecurity; and theoretical computer science.

RIT’s computer science master’s degree is designed for students who have an undergraduate degree (or minor) in computer science, as well as those who have a strong background in a field in which computers are applied, such as engineering, science, or business. The degree is offered on a full- or part-time basis and can be completed either on-campus or online.

The program is designed to develop skills and educate CS students to be major contributors in the computing industry. The graduate program in computer science provides state-of-the-art education through the use of didactic courses to those students who wish to further their knowledge and careers within the computing industry. The program emphasizes continuing self-development and broadening of the knowledge of individuals currently engaged in science, technology and engineering-related fields. It also prepares persons who have completed undergraduate majors in these fields for entry into a career in the numerous areas that use computing technology. Both the theoretical and applied aspects of computer science are emphasized in this program.

The CS MS is a very small, highly selective, four-semester program for students who wish to deepen their knowledge of computer science through advanced coursework, research, writing, and teaching. The program is ideal for self-motivated students who have expository skills, enjoy the research environment, and like working with undergraduates in introductory courses. Students in the program serve as teaching assistants and receive full tuition plus a stipend.

The thesis-based Master of Science in Computer Science program provides students with skills and knowledge necessary to pursue doctoral studies or a professional career in the rapidly changing computing and technology fields and in the rapidly advancing field of artificial intelligence. This is done through course work in specialized areas of computing technology, applications, and theory, as well as participation in research-oriented seminars, and culminates in an original research thesis. Students pursuing the thesis-based Master of Science in Computer Science program may optionally elect to seek employment through Co-operative education.

Computer technology continues to advance, with applications used in all fields and disciplines. Computers and software aid, inform and enrich our life. Students interested in exploring Computer Science beyond the basics of undergraduate study can deepen their knowledge and gain targeted, cutting-edge expertise through graduate study.
