The University of British Columbia Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Engineering is a 4-year Vancouver-campus degree for international students. Indian applicants need 85% or higher in Class 12 with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Total tuition sits near INR 1.80 Crore across the programme, with a September intake each year.

The programme trains engineers to solve air, water, land and living-system quality problems using chemical, civil and environmental engineering. It stands out because three engineering faculties share teaching, plus an optional 20-month paid Co-op. It suits students who want Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) eligibility paired with sustainability specialisation.

  • Graduates qualify for Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) status through Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia after four years of documented practice.
  • Students pick three technical electives plus one complementary studies elective to shape their focus area.
  • Direct access to UBC water, air quality and ecosystem management research labs from Year 2 onward.

Current Admission Status

Applications for the September 2027 intake are Not Yet Open. International student deadline: 15 January 2027.

The online application opens in early October 2026. Indian applicants should ready transcripts, English scores and references before that window.

  • UBC caps international undergraduate tuition increases at three percent per year for four years or until graduation, whichever comes first.
  • Ancillary AMS student society, athletics, U-Pass transit and iMED insurance fees are billed separately each Winter Session term.
  • Year 1 is the shared First-Year Engineering programme; entry into the Environmental (ENVL) specialisation happens in Year 2.

Cost of Living in Vancouver for Environmental Engineering Students

Vancouver is one of the costlier Canadian student cities, so realistic monthly budgeting matters as much as tuition planning. The table below reflects an off-campus shared-apartment scenario within transit distance of the Point Grey campus.

Tip for Indian students: Budget for at least INR 63 Lakhs of combined tuition and living costs for Year 1 alone, since Vancouver rents rise faster than tuition each September lease cycle.

UBC Environmental Engineering Admission

Admission to Environmental Engineering happens in two stages at UBC Vancouver. Indian applicants first apply to the shared First-Year Engineering programme, then choose ENVL as their specialisation during Term 2 of Year 1.

Intakes and Application Windows

IntakeSession DatesInternational Deadline
Winter Session (September start)September 2027 to April 202815 January 2027
Summer Session (May start)Limited engineering entry, verify directlyVerify at UBC
  • The online application for the September 2027 intake opens in early October 2026 via UBC Undergraduate Admissions.
  • English test scores must be dated on or after 1 January 2025 for a September 2027 start.
  • Applicants pay a non-refundable application fee at submission, verify the current amount at UBC.

Academic Eligibility for Indian Applicants

UBC evaluates Indian Class 12 transcripts through its International Credential Evaluation Service. Environmental Engineering falls under the Faculty of Applied Science, which requires strong performance in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

RequirementUBC StandardIndian Equivalent
Class 12 overallCompetitive academic profileApproximately 85% or higher on CBSE, ISC or state boards
MathematicsIB Math Analysis and Approaches SL or HL, or Applications and Interpretations HLClass 12 Mathematics with strong marks
ChemistryIB Chemistry requiredClass 12 Chemistry with strong marks
PhysicsIB Physics requiredClass 12 Physics with strong marks
  • UBC notes that academically strong candidates missing either Chemistry or Physics may be evaluated case-by-case.
  • WES (World Education Services) or UBC credential evaluation sets the official equivalence between Indian and Canadian grades.
  • Indian applicants without IB Chemistry or Physics should submit a supplemental statement explaining their science coursework.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

UBC accepts multiple English tests, but Applied Science does not raise the university-wide minimums for Environmental Engineering. Indian applicants need to meet both the overall band and the per-component minimums.

TestOverall MinimumPer Component
IELTS Academic6.56.0 in each of Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking
TOEFL iBT (0 to 120 scale)90Reading 22, Listening 22, Writing 21, Speaking 21
TOEFL iBT (1.0 to 6.0 scale)4.5Reading 4.5, Listening 5, Writing 4.5, Speaking 4
Duolingo English Test125Reading 115, Listening 115, Writing 120, Speaking 120
PTE Academic6560 in each component
CAEL or CAEL Online70Full test as specified

Note: TOEFL iBT moved to a 1.0 to 6.0 band scale on 21 January 2026. UBC currently lists both the 0 to 120 requirement and the 1.0 to 6.0 requirement above, since both scales are reported during the 2026 to 2028 transition. Verify the current requirement on the UBC admissions page before applying.

  • Indian applicants usually pick IELTS or TOEFL because coaching bandwidth in metros favours these two tests.
  • The Writing 21 barrier on TOEFL trips more Indian applicants than the overall 90, so plan a targeted retest window.
  • Test results older than two years by 1 September 2027 will not be accepted for the Winter Session intake.

Also Check: UBC Vancouver Global and Subject Rankings

Tip for Indian students: Submit English test results by 15 February 2027 even if you meet the January application deadline, because UBC treats the ELP document date as a separate hard cutoff.

UBC Environmental Engineering Application

UBC uses a single online undergraduate application portal for all Bachelor of Applied Science entry points. Indian applicants apply to the shared First-Year Engineering programme, then request Environmental Engineering placement during Year 1 Term 2.

IntakeExpected DeadlineStatus
Winter Session 2027 (September 2027 start)15 January 2027Application opens early October 2026
Summer Session 2027 (limited engineering entry)Verify at UBCProgram-dependent, restricted for engineering
  • The 15 January 2027 deadline covers all Applied Science undergraduate applications, including Environmental Engineering track intent.
  • Supporting document uploads close 31 January 2027 for Winter Session 2027 applicants.
  • English Language Admission Standard documentation must reach UBC by 15 February 2027 for the Winter Session 2027 intake.

Application Step-by-Step for Indian Students

The UBC pathway is document-heavy but predictable, so building a checklist works better than reactive last-week uploads. The following sequence lines up with UBC deadlines and Indian document turnaround times.

  1. Register on the UBC undergraduate applicant portal from early October 2026.
  2. Upload Class 11 marksheet, Class 12 predicted grades and Class 10 marksheet by 31 January 2027.
  3. Submit IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo or CAEL results by 15 February 2027.
  4. Complete the Broad-Based Admissions personal profile inside the application.
  5. Accept your offer and pay the non-refundable deposit by the date on your admission letter, typically 1 May or 1 June 2027.
  6. Send final Class 12 board mark sheets to UBC by 25 July 2027 for degree confirmation.

Personal Profile Strategy for Environmental Engineering

The UBC personal profile carries meaningful weight for Applied Science, especially in oversubscribed years. Indian applicants should treat it as a scored component, not an afterthought.

  • Anchor two responses to sustainability, climate or water projects done through school clubs, NGOs or internships.
  • Show measurable outputs such as litres treated, trees planted, or waste tonnage diverted, rather than generic volunteering.
  • Reference the three-faculty structure to signal you understand the chemical, civil and environmental scope of ENVL.

Also Check: The University of British Columbia Vancouver Profile

Application tip: Draft the UBC personal profile in Google Docs during October 2026 and paste the final version into the portal in December, so you avoid the January 2027 last-week traffic that has crashed the applicant portal in past cycles.

UBC Environmental Engineering Scholarships

UBC funds international undergraduates through automatic entrance scholarships and a small set of high-value competitive awards. Indian Environmental Engineering applicants can stack an entrance scholarship with the Faculty of Applied Science engineering award if academic and profile strength support both.

ScholarshipAmount (CAD)Amount (INR)Renewable
International Major Entrance Scholarship (IMES)10,000 to 25,000 per year6.65 Lakhs to 16.63 Lakhs per yearYes, up to 3 additional years

International Impact AwardVerify at UBCVerify at UBCYes, renewable
Elizabeth and Leslie Gould Entrance Scholarship (Engineering)2,5001.66 LakhsYes, up to 3 additional years
  • The IMES and OIS need no separate application and get auto-assessed when you apply by the 15 January 2027 deadline.
  • The Karen McKellin, Wehrung and International Impact awards need a separate International Scholars application by 15 November 2026.
  • The Gould scholarship is one of the few engineering-specific awards open to Indian citizens on a Canadian study permit.

Scholarship Priorities for Indian Applicants

Indian ENVL applicants should optimise for a two-track scholarship strategy rather than banking on one large award. The competitive Scholars route is high-payout but low-probability, so entrance scholarships should carry the base plan.

  • Chase the Scholars route only if you have national-level academic honours plus a documented community leadership record.
  • Prepare the Scholars nomination essay by 1 November 2026, targeting sustainability, climate or water leadership themes.
  • Do not decline your IMES offer while waiting on Scholars, since Scholars finalists forfeit both IMES and OIS on selection.

Also Check: Full List of UBC Vancouver Scholarships for International Students

Scholarship reality: Fewer than 1% of international applicants win the Karen McKellin award, so most Indian students should target a CAD 10,000 to 25,000 IMES and treat higher awards as upside, not a plan.

UBC Environmental Engineering Salary and Placements

UBC publishes an aggregate 96 per cent full-time employment rate for engineering graduates two years after convocation. Environmental Engineering falls in the mid-range of Applied Science salaries but leads on sustainability and consulting placements.

RoleAnnual Salary (CAD)Annual Salary (INR)
Junior Environmental Engineer (entry level)60,000 to 70,00039.90 Lakhs to 46.55 Lakhs

Source: UBC Faculty of Applied Science graduate outcomes surveys and public salary benchmarks for British Columbia.

  • Federal and provincial income tax reduces the gross salary by roughly 25 to 32 per cent in British Columbia, so verify take-home with the CRA tax calculator before signing.
  • Co-op alumni report earning CAD 3,500 to CAD 5,500 per month during their four-month terms, which offsets Year 3 and Year 4 tuition.
  • The three biggest employers of ENVL graduates are Stantec, WSP and Golder (now WSP), followed by BC Hydro and Metro Vancouver.

Career Paths Specific to Environmental Engineering

The ENVL degree opens roles that pure civil or chemical engineering graduates rarely access. Indian students choosing this specialisation should map career preferences before selecting three technical electives in Year 3.

  • Environmental consulting firms hire directly from UBC Co-op cohorts for impact assessment and remediation projects.
  • Municipal water utilities in British Columbia and Alberta absorb ENVL graduates into treatment plant design and monitoring roles.
  • Federal environment ministries recruit graduates into policy advisory and regulatory science roles after two years of practice.

ROI reality: A first-year junior environmental engineer paying off INR 1.80 Crore of tuition realistically needs 6 to 8 years of Canadian earnings, so the PGWP-to-permanent-residence pathway matters more than the entry salary.

Canada Visa Pathway for UBC Environmental Engineering

Indian students admitted to UBC apply for a Canada Study Permit through the Regular Study Permit Stream, since the Student Direct Stream (SDS) closed on 8 November 2024. The permit costs CAD 150 plus CAD 85 biometrics and needs a Provincial Attestation Letter from British Columbia before submission.

  • Proof of funds for a single applicant outside Quebec is CAD 20,635 for living costs plus the first year tuition of roughly CAD 66,200.
  • Processing time from India runs 8 to 12 weeks after biometrics, so submit by mid-May 2027 for a September start.
  • British Columbia issues Provincial Attestation Letters directly to UBC, which forwards them to admitted international students.
  • The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) grants up to 3 years of open work rights after the four-year degree, since bachelor engineering graduates are exempt from the field-of-study cap.
  • PGWP applicants must show CLB Level 7 in all four English abilities, roughly IELTS General 6.0 across sections.

Honest take: UBC ranks higher for Environmental Sciences (QS 15) than it does overall (QS 45), so the subject-level pedigree of this specific programme punches above the university-wide reputation.

The UBC Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Engineering suits Indian students who want a QS top-15 subject brand with a defined Professional Engineer licensing route and 20 months of paid Co-op. The single hardest decision-driver is whether your family can absorb INR 1.80 Crore in tuition without an IMES scholarship confirmed at offer stage.

UBC Environmental Engineering FAQs

Ques. Is UBC Environmental Engineering worth INR 1.80 Crore for Indian students?

Ans. The programme is worth the outlay for Indian students who plan to stay in Canada on a 3-year PGWP, use Co-op earnings of CAD 3,500 to 5,500 per month to offset tuition, and target Professional Engineer status. Return-to-India applicants without confirmed employer sponsorship should compare against Environmental Engineering at IIT Bombay or IIT Kharagpur first.

Ques. Can Indian applicants enter Environmental Engineering directly in Year 1 at UBC?

Ans. No, all Applied Science admits start in the shared First-Year Engineering programme. Environmental Engineering (ENVL) placement happens during Term 2 of Year 1, based on first-term grades and a specialisation preference form. Applicants therefore apply to First-Year Engineering, not ENVL directly.

Ques. What is the difference between UBC Environmental Engineering and Environmental Sciences?

Ans. Environmental Engineering is a professional Bachelor of Applied Science that leads to Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) eligibility through Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia. Environmental Sciences is a Bachelor of Science research pathway with no engineering licensure and different Year 3 elective structure. ENVL draws on chemical, civil and environmental engineering faculties, while Environmental Sciences sits primarily inside the Faculty of Science.

Ques. Does UBC Environmental Engineering lead to Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensing?

Ans. Yes, the programme is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. Graduates need four years of documented supervised practice before they receive full P.Eng. status through Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia. This route is valid across all Canadian provinces through inter-provincial mobility agreements.

Ques. How much does the UBC Environmental Engineering Co-op programme pay?

Ans. Co-op placements pay CAD 3,500 to CAD 5,500 per month, which converts to roughly INR 2.33 Lakhs to INR 3.66 Lakhs monthly. Students complete five four-month placements totalling up to 20 months of paid work, distributed across Year 2 summer, Year 3 and Year 4. This earned income typically offsets one full year of Environmental Engineering tuition for Indian students.
