Carleton University Bachelor of Arts (B.A) Law is a four-year honours degree in Ottawa, Canada, open to international students with a 12+ band IELTS or TOEFL 80+. Annual tuition runs CAD 34,322 (INR 23.74 Lakhs), with total first-year costs at CAD 51,281 (INR 35.48 Lakhs). Fall 2026 intake applications close April 1, 2026. The program trains legal professionals and policy analysts through four specializations: Business Law, Criminal Law and Social Order, Law Policy and Government, or Transnational Law and Human Rights.
Carleton operates the oldest and largest BA Law program in Canada — a distinction that means robust alumni networks, established employer partnerships, and four distinct specialization paths unavailable elsewhere. Ideal applicants combine strong academics (75%+ in senior social sciences), fluent English, and interest in either law practice, policy work, or NGO roles. The program blends theory with co-op work terms, enabling internships at Parliament Hill, the Supreme Court, and major law firms.
- Four specializations allow you to tailor the degree to law practice, policy, or human rights focus.
- Optional co-op work terms embed paid internships with Parliament Hill, NGOs, and courts.
- Oldest BA Law program in Canada creates strong employer recognition across legal and policy sectors.

- Tuition lock-in eliminates exchange-rate risk for the three-year window (a major advantage for INR budgets).
- Mandatory fees include health insurance, city transit pass, and on-campus health services — non-negotiable.
- Books are law-heavy; budget CAD 150 to CAD 200 per course for case law and statutory materials.

Carleton University Law B.A Admission 2026
Intakes run Fall and Winter, with Fall dominant (90% of intake). Winter slots fill by mid-December. Academic entry is straightforward: maintain at least a 70% average in final secondary school year, with competitive admits averaging 75%+.
| Requirement | Standard | For Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Secondary school GPA | Minimum 70%, Competitive 75%+ | CBSE/ICSE 80%+ recommended; SSLC equivalents assessed individually |
| Final 3 subjects (senior year) | Minimum 70% average | Social sciences, English, and one additional subject counted |
| Co-op eligibility | 2.5+ GPA in first year | Same threshold; co-op adds 2-4 months per term |
| Degree duration | 4 years full-time | 4 years; co-op may extend by 4-8 months total |
Carleton is ranked 781-790 globally (QS 2026) and 501 by THE 2026. Within Canada, it ranks in the Tier 1 Comprehensive category — top 15 research universities.
English Language Proficiency Block
International students must prove English fluency. IELTS and TOEFL are the standard routes; Carleton also accepts Duolingo and PTE. Choose based on test availability in your region and timeline.
| Test | Overall Minimum | Per-Band Minimum | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS | 6.5 | 6.0 in all bands | 2 years |
| TOEFL iBT | 80 | Writing 20, Speaking 18 | 2 years |
| Duolingo | 110 | N/A | 1 year |
| PTE Academic | 58 | 50 in all bands | 2 years |
- IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 per band is the most common Indian route — feasible with 3-4 months prep if your English is conversational.
- TOEFL 80 is slightly easier than IELTS 6.5 if you prepare for the reading and writing sections heavily.
- Duolingo 110 is fastest to attempt but has the shortest validity (1 year); retake costs less than IELTS.
Tip for Indian students: IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 minimums per band is the realistic threshold. A single 5.5 band (speaking, often the weakest) costs you the admit. Plan 4-6 months of dedicated prep if your English is semi-fluent.
Carleton University Law B.A Application 2026
Apply via the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) for domestic students, or directly via Carleton’s international portal. Submit transcripts (via WES for Indian students — 2-3 week processing), English test scores, and a brief personal statement (250 words). No interview required for the BA Law program.
| Intake | Expected Deadline | Status (as of June 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2026 | 01 April 2026 | Closed |
| Winter 2027 | 01 November 2026 | Expected |
| Fall 2027 | 28 February 2027 | Expected |
- WES evaluation takes 2-3 weeks; submit Indian school transcripts by mid-March for April deadlines.
- Fall 2027 has a priority deadline (28 February 2027) with rolling admissions beginning June 1, 2027.
- Winter intakes are smaller; apply by November 1 for January entry.
Application tip: Use the 250-word statement to explain why Law specifically, and which specialization interests you. Demonstrate fit to the program’s strengths (policy, NGO work, or litigation), not generic law passion.
Carleton University Law B.A Scholarships 2026
Carleton awards merit-based scholarships to admitted international undergraduates. All admitted international BA Law students receive the President’s Welcome Award: CAD 2,000 to CAD 5,000 annually (INR 1,38,380 to INR 3,45,950). This is automatic with admission — no separate application required.
High achievers (85%+ on senior secondary exams) qualify for the Prestige Scholarships: CAD 5,000 to CAD 14,178 annually (INR 3,45,950 to INR 9,81,634). The International Students’ Tuition Prize offers CAD 10,000 (INR 6,91,900) via random draw to five recipients annually who pay the tuition deposit.
Carleton law graduates report modest scholarship offsets — typically CAD 2,000 to CAD 5,000 covers 6% to 14% of annual tuition for most entrants. Aim for excellence in secondary school to unlock Prestige tier. After year one, research province-specific and NGO-funded scholarships for law students.
Scholarship reality: Merit scholarships here are smaller than at US schools. Budget the full CAD 51,281 per year, then treat scholarships as bonus cost-reduction. Four-year total: CAD 205,124 (INR 1.42 Crores) before scholarships, CAD 197,124 (INR 1.36 Crores) if you win President’s Award each year.

Co-op participants often convert internships to full-time offers, often at higher starting salaries (CAD 55,000 to CAD 65,000).

Canada Visa Pathway for Law B.A Graduates 2026
Canada offers a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) to all international degree holders. The PGWP validity matches your programme duration (up to four years maximum). After completing your BA Law, you can work full-time in Canada for up to four years on an open work permit — no employer sponsorship required. This is a unique advantage over the US or UK.
- PGWP is valid for four years if your programme is exactly four years; part-time or shorter programmes get pro-rated permits.
- Open work permit means you can switch employers freely without visa re-application — critical flexibility for trying roles.
- Work permit is free to apply for; processing takes 4-6 weeks after degree completion.
- Spouse and dependent children can accompany you on an open work permit tied to your PGWP.
After gaining 12 months of Canadian work experience, you become eligible for Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker or Ontario PNP routes). Salary thresholds for skilled migration start at CAD 62,000 annually — easily achievable for policy and law firm roles. Processing time to permanent residence is 6-12 months, and citizenship is available after three years as a permanent resident.
Visa reality: Canada’s PGWP is the easiest post-study pathway globally — no lottery, no points threshold, automatic approval. Four years of open-permit work + low point thresholds make PR almost certain for Law graduates earning above CAD 62,000.

Carleton University’s BA Law is Canada’s largest and oldest law degree for undergraduates — a distinction that opens doors across Parliament, courts, and civil service. Total cost over four years reaches roughly INR 1.42 Crores, offset partially by automatic scholarships and four years of work permit eligibility post-graduation. For Indian students aiming at policy, NGO, or federal-service careers, this program offers a direct pipeline with exceptional visa and employment outcomes. The decision hinges on whether you prioritize practice law (where a full Juris Doctor is standard) or policy and governance (where the BA suffices and career velocity is faster).
Bachelor of Arts (Law) FAQs
Ques. Do I need to complete a Juris Doctor (JD) after the BA Law to practice law in Canada?
Ans. No, the BA Law does not lead directly to Bar admission. To practise law, you must complete either a Juris Doctor (JD) at a Canadian law school (2-3 years post-BA) or a law degree from outside Canada, followed by bar exams in your target province. The BA Law prepares you for policy, NGO, and legal-adjacent roles but not courtroom practice without further study.
Ques. Can Indian BA Law graduates secure a post-study work permit immediately after graduation?
Ans. Yes. All four-year degree holders are eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) valid for four years. Application is free and approval is automatic upon degree completion. No job offer or employer sponsorship is required.
Ques. What is the realistic acceptance rate for Indian applicants to Carleton’s BA Law program?
Ans. Carleton does not publish programme-specific acceptance rates. Historical data suggests 2.5% to 3% of international applicants to competitive Carleton programmes are admitted. The BA Law programme competitive average is 75%+ (on a 100-point scale), favouring applicants with strong academics, IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL 80+, and demonstrated interest in law or policy.
Ques. Does Carleton’s BA Law offer co-op work terms, and can I do internships abroad?
Ans. Yes, co-op is optional and available to students who maintain a 2.5+ GPA after first year. You can complete up to three co-op terms (typically four months each). Most co-op placements are within Canada (Parliament, NGOs, law firms), but international placements may be negotiated with department permission. Co-op experience is a major competitive advantage for post-graduation roles.
Ques. Can I switch specializations (Business Law, Criminal Law, Policy, Human Rights) after starting, and does it affect degree timeline?
Ans. Yes, specialization is chosen by year two, and switching is permitted. You can even graduate without a formal specialization (as an honours graduate in Law). Switching does not extend the degree timeline — you have four years regardless.

A comprehensive list of extracurriculars is required, otherwise the holistic process just consists of your high school GPA. Carleton University offers one of the only Pre-Law programs in Canada, which is what majorly drew me towards it. Along with that, the placements in the fields of psychology and law are quite well-reputed. The city of Ottawa as well, since the Parliament is located there, is what made me choose Carleton due to the plethora of internship opportunities. Till now, my experience at Carleton has been amazing, right from the academic structure of my course, to the approach of the faculty, to the social assimilation.
