For my program bow valley and olds college was the only places I knew that offered veterinary assistant. I wanted to stay in Calgary so I chose bow valley. The admission process was easy. It was a $75 application fee and from there I was accepted. I had graduated high school so my transcripts were sent over with my application. I heard good things about bow valley such as they were organized and very helpful. I am happy to stay in Calgary with my friends and family and learn about the things that I love.
Course Curriculum
The course curriculum really covers the veterinary assistant scope of practice quite well. It also educated that there is a possibility of being cross-trained depending on where you work.
Exams
I recommend joining this program because it not only teaches you about working with animals but working with computers, business communication and lots of medical terms that help in health care. To get into my program my high school classes that were required were 65% or higher in ela-2 and 65% or higher in math -3. The course I take is 36 credits and a program GPA of 2.5 in order to graduate. My program offers online and in-person classes so I do a mix of the two.
Placement
As of job opportunities, bow valley offers a work experience class that helps you get your foot in the door. Bow valley also provides places that you can volunteer at that when you graduate and receive your certificate you might be asked to be hired instead of volunteering.
Internship
Our campus provides jobs for the cafes such as Starbucks and tims located inside. If you are interested in working for just hand in a resume at the location.
Events
Due to taking majority of my classes online for my last semester I have not been around for any events. Our college does do council runs how ever and each student is asked to vote if they would like.
Fees
The tuition fee for my program was $6000. I received financial aid through an Alberta and a government loan. My loan was $8000 to cover my expenses for Calgary transit monthly bus pass and other bills I had to pay. I also received a Rutherford scholarship of $200 from my grades at my high school for achieving higher than 80?s.
Scholarship
Firstly I went to a financial class offered by bow valley college and from there I applied for financial aid.
Examination Structure
I feel confident with the exam structure.
Faculty
Bow valleys faculty is extremely helpful no matter the student class size. Every instructor I have had always made time for me one on one if I needed help with something. I enjoyed the teaching methodology as some of my instructors were nurses, dental hygienist, worked in business or in vet care. It allowed me to understand the different perspectives of health care. All instructors were all registered in their practice and had PhDs and came to bow valley to teach.
Hostel
Bow valley does not provide any residence as it is a local college in Calgary and most students already live in Calgary. Students from other countries face the challenge of finding residence close by for a cheap price.
