Parth's study abroad experience at Wilfrid Laurier University

I applied to the following universities: Dalhousie University - Rejected [They rejected me in their interview as they had high expectations] University of Victoria - Rejected [They didn't have enough staff/faculty for computer science] Concordia University - Offered another program [The program I applied to got full as it was on a first-come, first-served basis] Wilfrid Laurier University - Accepted I chose Wilfrid Laurier University because it has its campus in Waterloo, which is considered as silicon valley of Canada, and I believe it would be beneficial to get an internship and job opportunities after graduation. In addition, Wilfrid Laurier University is a well-reputed and highly ranked university worldwide. Moreover, they have a strong academic environment. I applied for the winter intake 2024 because I graduated with my bachelor's degree in September 2023 and didn't want to wait for a very long time. Otherwise, I would highly recommend the fall intake as it's the best intake because they offer a wide range of courses and programs in that intake, which may or may not be available in other intakes. I applied to only 4 universities in total— Wilfrid Laurier University - Got Admitted Concordia - Accepted University of Windsor - Accepted University of Waterloo - Rejected I received rejection from UW because of two reasons that i can think of, the first being my background was in IT and I was applying for a master's in Computer and Electrical Engineering, and secondly, one of my 3 professors didn't reply on time to the referral mail from the UW. There were a few factors like, Concordia University is in Quebec and they were mandating the French Language. And the University of Windsor was costly in tuition and at the same time in the expense of rent and other things. My family lived in Brampton, so i took admission in Wilfrid Laurier University and drove to the university twice a week. Also, the bus service is nice from Brampton to Wilfrid Laurier University The admission process was quite simple; my IDP agent applied on my behalf, and she asked me for the required documents and told me to pay the required fees. Eligibility criteria for IELTS at my time were a minimum 6.5 band in speaking and writing and an overall score ofmore than 7 band. The only challenge I faced was depositing the initial 2500 CAD admission fee, like figuring out how to deposit the money to the university account, because at that time they were not accepting wire transfers, so i had to go through the bank and pay extra to get that money deposited. I applied for Winter Intake, I was mostly influenced by the factor like my current job, I had completed a year in my job and i would get same points for PR if i leave my job in second year, or else i would have to complete 3 years to get more points for PR, I applied in the month of May 2023, was accepted in July, deposited the 2500 CAD in August and the remaining fees by September, got my VISA approved in the SDS Category in November and left for Canada on 23rd December....Read More

I Applied in: Northeastern University - Accepted, Toronto Metropolitan University - Waitlisted, University of Ottawa - Rejected, Dalhousie University - Rejected, Wilfrid Laurier University - Admitted I was waitlisted at Toronto Metropolitan University for the program MS in Computer and Electrical Engineering. I received acceptance from Northeastern University for their Master of Science in Information Systems, and from the Wilfrid Laurier University for their Master of Applied Computing program which I eventually pursued. For the universities which rejected me, my CGPA in my Bachelor's degree was the biggest factor which contributed to my rejected as it was 7.22. I had work experience of 2 years but universities mostly focus on education performance in bachelor's degree and due to that I was rejected. For Dalhousie university, I messed up my coding interview so I was rejected due to that reason. I chose this university because of it's program primarily. The program was 16 months long, which was what I desired. Other than that, this university is in the city of Waterloo which has many IT companies, and as a student of Wilfrid Laurier University, you can study a couple subjects at University of Waterloo as well and that university is top 3 here in Canada. The admission process involved firstly applying through the Ontario Universities portal. In that I had to pay a fee of $160 for application. The application bundle consisted of my transcript, a scanned copy of all 8 semester marksheets from my bachelor's degree, 3 LORs, my english proficiency exam result (IELTS) and 1 SOP. The eligibility criteria for my program at the Wilfrid Laurier University was at least 75% in bachelor's degree and a minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS. IELTS is the accepted exam and there is no requirement for SAT, GMAT or GRE for the program which I studied. Overall experience was pretty good as the admissions department is very helpful and provide quick responses. There was just a simple challenge which was that I had to send my attested photocopies of all semester marksheets through post or email, and I chose the post option due to which it took about 2 weeks for them to confirm whether I have been finally admitted in the university or not. I applied for September 2023 intake. I applied for this specific one because the graduation date would be January 2025 which is a good time to start hunting for job as the job market opens up at this time. The admission process took 2 months for me, although I applied in March 2023, 1 week before application deadline. I know batchmates, who applied as early as November 2022, but still received their response in May 2022, which is when everyone receives their response. From application to acceptance there aren't many events, it's just that even if you apply in November when the applications open up, you are not going to get a response before May (which is around 7 months).  ...Read More

Liked the program and small community vibes. It was important to me that the school I chose have an healthy amount of funding to my program. Other schools I visited it wasn?t obvious that some neglected certain programs. I chose Laurier because of the small campus size, program reputation, and it is close to my home town. Laurier has smaller class sizes which makes learning a more personal experience and you are able to get more attention from your professors!...Read More
