Course Curriculum

10

  • The econ programme is definitely rigorous and balanced between theory and practical work. the classes are quite engaging, with very different students from different ethinicity , the workload could be very heavy sometimes because of back-to-back assignments and quizzes but it is part of the process. for me, I have around 3 classes that run daily from 1:30 to 5pm. The average number of students is about 30 and have very less indian students. I only have 3 friends in this course.

Admission Experience

  • I applied to :
    • Queen's (Admitted),
    • McMaster (Admitted),
    • York (Admitted),
    • University of Toronto (Waitlisted)
    • Wilfrid Laurier (Admitted)
  • I got confirmation of admission from Queen's, McMaster, York, Wilfrid Laurier University
  • I guess i was rejected by UofT later on but by then I had already accepted Queen's
  • I think I messed up at the interview for UofT; I should have started preparing before.
  • Queen's is known for its prestigious ranking in the world; many of the billionaires passed out from here, including Elon Musk, he was also enrolled in Queen's Econ along with Physics.
  • I knew that Queen's has some good placement under this program and I also got a scholarship here so....
  • I was asked to score well in maths and also have a Good total average of 90%. I had to give a supplementary essay to prove my skills, followed up with IELTS which is mandatory.
  • minimum scores were 6.5 overall (not less than 6 in any)
  • For me it was quite easy but nerve-wracking too since I had good grades and also some extracurriculars.
  • I applied for the fall intake. It was the only intake option I had after my class 12th boards so I applied for it.
  • It took me about 3-4 months for the full admission process at the university. Firstly, I got a predicted mark sheet from my school, then i took IELTS, got some Reference letters from my teachers, created applications on websites and heard back a decision based on the predicted mark sheets. Then I was asked to complete the conditions to get a final offer letter and finally completed all the conditions and got admission
  • Then applied for a visa on the SDS stream.

Faculty

10

  • The faculty-to-student ratio is about 1 teacher for every 45 students, if that makes sense. I think it is much less when compared to indian education system.
  • The professors here focus heavily on practical learning rather than theory, which makes it quite ready for a job.
  • Yes, we do have an assigned department to help us secure jobs in particular fields through networks.
  • I love my professors the most; they have hands-on experience and have studied at many different IVY leagues.

Campus Life

10

  • Campus regularly organises festival camps, parties, and stalls. We have a total of 2 campuses; one is called Main campus and the other one is West campus which are 15 min away from each other.
  • There is a huge diwali and holi celebration every year and we get to eat indian food for free sometimes.
  • You get to sign up for many of the sports clubs in queen's which include football, table tennis, swimming, basketball and badminton.
  • We have a total of 3 libraries on campus, which is perfect during the exam seasons

Part Time Jobs

  • To secure a teaching assistant job, you have to be in good academic standing and you have to be in the good books of the professors. I don't have any friends this sem who are working as TAs in my course but I know the pay ranges from 16-17 cad per hour. Students can work as assistants in the library or as front desk managers. The max hours of work is 20 which is allowed by IRCC for international students.
  • Most of the students here work part-time at the restaurants, which pay them about 17 CAD hourly. Their shifts are as per there classes and they can only work for 20 hours, being international students. As far as I know, most of them got their jobs through linkedIn, I would say it is a mix of both tough and difficult to get a job; it just depends on when you apply. i would say apply at the end of the year to get a job easily.

Placement

10

  • About 78 percent of the graduates get their job right after graduating from Uni, the average salary varies from course to course and the job type and level. I would say it ranges from 55000-100000 CAD every year.
  • Most common way to get a job is through LinkedIn or networking with peers.
  • Some of my batchmates did an internship at banks this summer and have got a return offer for the next year when they graduate.
  • Mostly big banks such as CIBC, Scotiabank, KPMG, EY, and BMO hire a lot from my programme.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • I searched facebook Marketplace for rental units and there are many listed there for lease
  • It was quite easy for me to secure one
  • my monthly rent was 1000 CAD including all the utilities
  • Based on my experience, I would say start finding rental units as early as possible so that you don't risk your accommodation.
  • I live just 10 min away from campus and it's very close to downtown too.

Exams

  • I was asked to give IELTS in which i got 7.5 overall and not less than 6 in any.
  • Yes, you definitely need a statement of purpose, a letter of recommendation from your teachers, and some extra certificates to support your skills.
  • No, the interview was not a part of my application. so can't say anything on that but If you have some good academic standing along with some strong extracurriculars, then you are fine.

Fees

  • 54810 CAD is the tuition fee for full year and since I was off campus, I don't know about it much, but my rent was 1000 CAD
  • The tuition fees is due semester-wise (fall and winter) apart from this, my monthly expense is around 450 CAD including grocery and transportation, so breakdown-
    • Rent including utilities – 1000
    • grocery and takeout – 450
    • monthly expense of 1450 every month

Scholarship

  • Yeah, I got a scholarship for 10000 CAD; this was for 2 consecutive years
  • It was the International Student scholarship India (given to students with exceptional extracurriculars and strong academics).
  • Yeah, just 2 more friends of mine got it for 10000 CAD, distributed equally for 4 years.
  • I have no idea about the average scholarships each year but it is definitely less than 200 students every year. Please contact the department to know the exact amount.
