Course Curriculum

  • It was a mix of both. As we were required to submit a deliverable/assignment every day.
  • They have an inbuilt plagiarism checker. Which is positive and every submission is checked for AI and graded accordingly. Sometimes, some students fail for having 70% ai in their work.
  • Average number of students is 30 and 40 at max.
  • There are a number of Indian students. In my program there are approx. 50-60 students.

Admission Experience

  • I applied for two universities:
    • George Brown- Shortlisted, I didn’t move further with my application here, as it was offering either a 1-year program or a 3-year program. And there were no co-op opportunities for students.
    • Lambton College—shortlisted and admitted, I got myself admitted to this as it offers a 2-year program with a co-op opportunity.
  • Since a 2-year program will get you a 3-year work visa, that was the case in 2023.
  • My primary requirement was to have a 2-year program with co-op opportunities for students. That are only met in this college or there were other universities that provided this combo but financially it was expensive for international students.
  • Admission process was simple; the application fee is $0 at Lambton, so it can be a great backup. Once you apply here for free, you receive a conditional offer letter; these conditions are mentioned on the letter itself. Once you clear these conditions, plus pay the one-year fee, you are all set to go to the college. All you need is a visa and permit from IRCC and Service Ontario, respectively.
    • Note: make sure to convert your conditional offer letter to an unconditional offer letter.
  • Nowadays, IELTS and guess PTE and CELPIP are accepted. Earlier, only IELTS was accepted and the required band was 6.5; however, I scored 7.5.
  • Just make sure to upgrade the offer letter by raising a ticket on their JIRA platform and attaching the required documents.
  • I applied for September 2022 however I deferred it to May 2023 as September 2022 was full and January 2023 was not a preference.
  • The application process took around 7-10 days, after which I received a conditional offer letter. I took help from IDP education consultancy. Once you receive the conditional offer letter, you can get on with your visa application and loan.

Faculty

  • The ratio is very low. As a single faculty member has to teach around 30-35 students at a given moment. The content delivery is clear and with advanced classes using projectors and computers (for students- laptops) it is effective.
  • Yes, the approach of assignment study and test is effective. Although the test comprises 20-25 of the whole grade for a subject. The assignment gives you the hands-on experience.

Campus Life

6

  • There are 3 campuses:
    • Lambton, Toronto
    • Lambton, Sarnia
    • Lambton, Mississauga
  • Facilities such as the Indian canteen, tim hortons, the library, and the medical and IT facilities. Different kinds of labs. Gym for students (free). And more.
  • Every festival is celebrated on campus. Majorly like Canada Day, Christmas, Diwali and more.
  • The student forms teams or groups to facilitate the event. For example, once they celebrated the Philippines independence day.

Part Time Jobs

  • From my batch, no one secured these kinds of jobs. The pay range would be around $18-$20/hr, 40 hrs/week
  • It is very difficult to secure an on-campus job since the openings are few and also these jobs are temporary. Other jobs there are like event assistant and team member for book fairs or placement fairs.
  • Securing an off-campus part-time job is comparatively much easier. Students can secure these jobs by referral as well.
  • Every place in Canada has a fixed minimum wage for an hour. If we talk about toronto, ON. The minimum wage there was $17.50/hr when I was there. If you have a friend or relative who works at some place, the process is then quite easy. Or else you have to do a lot more footwork and search for part-time openings.
  • The part-time work process is quite simple. For instance, a person is going to look for a part-time job in a restaurant. He/she has to visit an outlet and have the icebreaker conversation. After this meet and greet, they can ask for a part-time opening. If yes, then the follow-up can be to meet the kitchen manager or just the manager.

Placement

6

  • From my batch, around 15-20% were well able to secure the job in six months. In my program students can expect to earn starting from $60000/yr.
  • First and foremost is networking, attending job fairs on campus and off campus. Using linkedin and optimizing it could help in a job hunt. Then comes the cold applying using different portals.
  • Since it was a PG program. There were students with a minimum of 10 years of experience. Students like these were able to secure a co-op and later on were made full-time.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • I used facebook marketplace to find the accommodation. My monthly rent was $900, including utilities and wifi. HydroElectricity, gas and wifi, along with laundry (dryer and washer), a microwave, fridge and a little bit of furniture like a sofa, a tea table and a dining table.
  • Look for a place in the area of north york near by don mills subway station. That way students can easily access college and downtown toronto for part-time work.
  • My accommodation was around 5 km from college; however, it took 40 mins to 60 mins to reach there.

Exams

  • IELTS.
  • NO documents are necessary. Statement of purpose (SOP), LOR, CV, and ITR are required in your visa process, not your admission process.
  • However, you may be required to provide class 10th & 12th reports and a college degree and transcript (if applying for a PG program). All of these conditions will be mentioned on your offer letter; please go through it carefully. Your service certificate, if any.

Fees

  • For my program:
    • Each semester was around $8000 with $500 variable. This includes all, the student support fees, co-op guidance fees and misc.
    • And the last semester, in my case, the WIL project had a fee of $2700.
    • For the first year, the whole fee has to be paid in advance, even before reaching CANADA, and then the student can pay by semester as well. Or you can look for scholarship or tuition fee aid/assistance.
  • For a single person, away from college accommodation, $500-$700/month could be an average rent (sharing a room with one other person). Single room rent can go as high as $1100/month. All of these prices include utilities, not wifi. Like water, gas, and electricity.
  • For transportation, students are eligible to get a TTC pass, which costs around $130/month. In that way, students can travel unlimited times on the TTC vehicles.
  • Regular expense: if you order food, I am a vegetarian so prices could be between $30 and $50 for a one-time meal. Quantity is generous.

Scholarship

  • No, I didn’t receive a scholarship. Very few receive scholarships and co-ops. However, some of my friends from Nepal didn’t have to pay the GIC amount, which is a requirement by IRCC for providing study visas to Indians. My guess is Nepali students are exempted from paying the GIC amount. To know more about scholarships you can check their website: www.lambtoncollege.ca
