Course Curriculum

10

  • Project management at Algoma University is not difficult. I would say it is simple because students from engineering, medical, and IT sectors find it as easy. We have both practical and theoretical ways of learning.
  • Positives
    • - They are updating syllabus every year based on the Canadian job market
    • - They are giving in-class activities to better understanding of the concepts
  • Negatives
    • - This course is not worth it if I do not possess PMP certification. We have to acquire PMP certificates in order to become project managers.
    • - They are not giving any co-op in this course
  • I have two classes in a week. On the first day I have two classes and on the second day I have only one class.
  • Timing:
  • Tuesday, 3 PM to 6 PM
  • Saturday, 3 PM to 9 PM
  • 30 students
  • In my class 29 students are from India and one student is from the Philippines. I am not sure about the number of students enrolled in this course. I think there are 1000 seats available in this course and among them, around 900 students are from India. Because of this size, we are divided into different sections.

Admission Experience

  • I applied to two colleges. They are:
    • 1. Algoma University: I received admission from this university within one week.
    • 2. Canadore college - I received admission after a month.
    • Admitted in both colleges
    • Algoma University
    • I didn't get any rejections from the college. I moved my application to Algoma University and Canadore College. I received admission from Algoma University at first.
  • 1. Reasons for choosing Algoma University:
  • Location: The university is located in Mississauga. There we have a lot of part-time jobs available.
  • Class schedule: There are only two days of classes. This would be helpful for doing part-time jobs.
  • Accommodation: There are lots of accommodations available in Mississauga, where my college is situated.
  • No exams: There is no examination for this particular subject.
  • Less language requirement: The language requirement is very low for this university to get admission.
  • In order to get acceptance, we need the following:
    • Previous educational documents
    • Passport
    • IELTS score
    • Previous work experience certificate
  • These are the documents that we required to get admission
  • Eligibility criteria:
  • Must have completed graduation level
  • IELTS score 6 overall and individual 6 each. They accept IELTS and PTE.
  • Overall, the admissions process was great. There were no challenges for taking admission. The university will guide us through each step.
  • I applied to the January 2024 intake. Factors influencing my decision are:
    • Canada was an immigration-friendly country at that time.
    • Canada is a PR-friendly country.
    • Students are eligible for 3 years stay back after completing our studies
    • Most of the occupations are in demand in Canada
    • Canada is utilising their lands. So, they require more working professionals in different sectors.
  • I started moving my application to Algoma University on July 27, 2023.
  • - 03 August 2023: Received Conditional offer Letter
  • - 08 August, 2023: Paid first year fees
  • - 14 August 2023: Received offer letter
  • - 15 August 2023: Accepted offer letter
  • - 24 August 2023: Went KIIMS hospital for biometric
  • - 01 September 2023: Filed visa
  • - 12 October 2023: Got visa

Faculty

10

  • The faculty-to-student ratio is 1:30. This ratio affects my interactions with the professor. Sometimes, I have to wait to discuss some questions with my professor. So, this sometimes affects my studies as well.
  • The lectures of some professors are good. I can understand some difficult concepts because of their teaching methodology. However, I am not able to understand because of the teaching method of some professors. Some of my professors are experts in their field. Their classes are really helping me to secure jobs in some areas.
  • They are not assisting students to find a part-time job. However, they help us to create resumes and help us to prepare for interviews.
  • I admire Pedram Lalbaksh, a professor in our university. His lectures are funny and he shares his experiences as well. I enjoy his lectures.

Campus Life

6

  • 3 campuses:
    • 1. Mississauga campus (Creekbank road at Mississauga)
    • 2. Brampton campus ( Brampton)
    • 3. Sault Ste. Marie campus (Main campus)
  • Facilities: Gym and medical service
  • Festivals: Diwali and Christmas
  • We can celebrate our cultural festivals but university has some conditions like not hurt other cultures, and university do not spend money for that. I saw the Algoma University wellness program.

Part Time Jobs

  • In my class, 5 students secured departmental assistant positions.
  • They are paid $18 per hour
  • Students can perform student councillors and administrative jobs. They are paid $18 per hour
  • Students can work only 24 hours per week
  • There is competition. So, it is difficult to secure the job. Moreover, interviews are highly professional and there are around three round of interview.
  • Students are paid $18 per hour. However, in some jobs they are paid more than $20 dollars. Jobs in warehouses and construction paid more than $20. 2. It is difficult to get a part time job. Many employers prefer workers who can work full-time. Students can only do part-time jobs. As a result, it is difficult to get a job. 3. They create strong resumes and visit restaurants and shops. They meet managers and pass the resume. Also, students apply online on platforms such as Indeed and LinkedIn. Process: Search jobs online, create an ATS-friendly resume, submit through the job portal, attend an interview, and follow up.

Placement

2

  • After graduation, there are around 70% secure jobs.
  • After graduation, they can earn $25 per hour
  • Most of the students are using online platforms to search for jobs. However, networking also helps students find the job.
  • My university is not providing campus placement. After graduation, they are finding jobs of their own.
  • Most of the students are working at Amazon and Walmart.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • I find accommodation through an accommodation WhatsApp group.
  • Monthly rent: $370 + $40 for utilities. Facilities included are parking, heater & AC, electricity, water, gas, internet, and Netflix subscription.
  • It was difficult when I was finding an accommodation because of the housing crisis. Also, there are a lot of scammers. So I have to ensure that the property owner is not a scammer.
  • Always double check before paying any advance amount to the property owners. Moreover, read the lease agreement clearly.
  • There is only 9.3 KM distance from my house to college. Most of the Indian students are living in Brampton and Mississauga.

Exams

  • IELTS and PTE to get admission to our university.
  • Required documents are:
    • CV
    • Statement of Purpose
    • Passport
    • Previous educational certificates
  • Other than this, we can submit our work experience documents if we have work experience. However, it is not compulsory. I submitted my work experience documents.
  • There is no interview for the admission process.

Fees

  • University fees: $36,000
    • Scholarship: $6000
  • Fees are charged on a yearly basis.
  • Monthly expenses
    • Rent: $370
    • Utilities: $40
    • Grocery $100
    • Mobile recharge: $40
    • Travel Expense: $100
    • Extra expenses:
    • Purchasing clothes: $60
    • Money sent to my family in India: $200
    • Chatgpt premium: $20
    • Outdoor activity expenses like going to amusement parks and trips: $ 150

Scholarship

  • I got a scholarship. I don't know the name of the scholarship. I discussed with my classmates and everyone got this scholarship. So, I think there is no eligibility criteria.
  • Total: 6000 CAD
  • First year: 3000
  • Second year: 3000
  • My classmates also received the same scholarship.
  • In my knowledge, everyone receives a scholarship at this university each year. Scholarship for each year is 3000 CAD. For example, if I am pursuing a two-year course, I will get a scholarship of 3000 CAD the first year and in the second year I will receive the same. So, total, I am eligible for 6,000 CAD.
