What Students Say
Likes
- Many of the biggest names in ML teach or supervise courses here. I even had a representation learning (Deep Learning) class taught by none other than professor Aaron Courville (one of the three authors of the Deep Learning book, which is THE book.)
- The ML and DL courses in particular imo are some of the best, taught by some of the best professors (top researchers affiliated with MIla, Quebec, are usually professors in UdeM or McGill) in the field.
- As an IUT student at McGill as well, I would whole heartedly say UdeM has better ML/DL courses than most of the top 20 Universities in the world. UdeM also ranks top 50 in QS specifically for CS overall as well, but the ML courses are really really good.
Dislikes
- There is a language issue for a lot of the subjects because it is a French University after all, however anyone pursuing a graduate course under DIRO (CS dept) can take take the English version of the classes.
- Most (I think all) ML professors affiliated with Mila (Yosua Bengio's ML research lab) teach in English. Mila = English but specifically for undergraduate classes I believe there are no English options.
Required Exams for Admission
My personal experience has been top notch. Being a student at UdeM is quite something once you open the course registration every semester and look at the subjects being offered for ML and the person whos is teaching it. The courses are hard and require work but the evaluation is fair and the teaching faculty are the same people who original wrote papers on the stuff that's being taught. Professors are approachable and listen to feedback, there are tons of networking opportunities and you are always surrounded by a cohort that helps you improve. Montreal as a city itself is perhaps my favorite city in North America and probably a students dream come true. Every semester students can also take up to two courses from another University too. Needless to say, I really think the experience is worth it.
Course Curriculum
10/10 for courses and industrial exposure is quite good, since it is in Montreal which is a tech hub especially or AI startups. This year the internship fairs were a bit lack luster but I supposed its the same everywhere considering how bad the job market is right now. But I have heard from past students that its generally very good. I got a good internship and so did quite a few of my friends so its definitely not an issue.
Faculty
Ioannis Mitliagkas was my ML professor in the first semester and he is one of the best professors I have ever met with respect to how he teaches. Most of the professors at UdeM/Mila and McGill are big names in ML and have google scholar citations for days but I was really impressed with how much care they take to teach students and impart that knowledge too. Also although I did not have a class with the esteemed prof Yoahua bengio, I attended a few of his special lectures and it is quite awe inspiring to listen to his insights about the field as a student.
Campus Life
10/10 , has everything , most universities in Montreal do. UdeM and McGill being the two premiere universities in Montreal have very good campuses and extra curriculars.
Placement
We have internship fairs and don't really have placement programs like ones that happen in India. However, students who graduate from here usually end up landing high paying jobs in tech companies.
Accommodation
I live in a 4 bedroom apartment with 2 other roommates right opposite the university and we pay 590 CAD$ per person. There are University dorms as well but I am not aware of the pricing structure.
Exams
I took the GRE and had a 320 and an 8.5 in IELTS but I believe since I personally applied through Mila (you can apply directly too) they thoroughly examined my profile for ML knowhow. ML projects (github repo links with fleshed out projects), ML career (LORs), undergrad GPA, research experience in ML, and a very good technical SOP are the top qualifications for Mila. For UdeM, I believe its mostly undergrad GPA. "Since I applied to Mila primarily (they offer the course through UdeM, you need to secure admission into both but Mila has more requirements so mentioning that, directly applying to UdeM is simpler), I required all 3 things, 3 LORs (2 academic for me and 1 from professional background.), 1 SOP, 1 CV. Highlight ML experience and technical knowhow and/or research interests or project interests that have a research spin to them.
Fees
27 992,70 CAD $/ year : this is without scholarship for Professional MSc. , research MSc. is fully funded.
Scholarship
I got the scholarship called the : Bourse d’exemption UdeM - 2e cycle : 9787.95 $ per year. No separate application is required for this, it depends on the student profile, and is decided by the department.
