Public Health Education Specialists work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, non-profit organizations, government agencies, doctors' offices, business & industry and colleges/universities. Upon graduation of the Public Health Studies - Community Health program at University of North Carolina Wilmington students are eligible to take a national exam to become Certified Health Education Specialists.
Graduates of the Public Health Studies Program will be able to:
- Discuss the history and philosophy of public health
- Discuss the core values, concepts, and functions of public health in the United States and globally
- Demonstrate the ability to use public health data
- Apply concepts of population health
- Explain human health and disease across the lifespan
- Discuss the determinants of health
- Explain the fundamental characteristics and functions of the United States healthcare system
- Discuss basic concepts of health policy, law, ethics, and economics
- Communicate in oral, written, and electronic forms and through a variety of media to diverse populations
- Locate, use, evaluate and synthesize public health information
- Advocate for protection and promotion of the public’s health at all levels of society
