The major in economics provides students with a broad conceptual framework for understanding the interaction between consumers, businesses, workers, and governments. Students majoring in economics develop an understanding of traditional economic topics such as consumption, production, unemployment, monetary and fiscal policy, inflation, market structure, and factors determining countries' economic growth as well as recessions. Familiarity and literacy in economics can assist in guiding the development of policies to address contemporary issues as varied as healthcare, education, sports, crime, income distribution, the impact of globalization, and the relation between economic growth, social fairness, and environmental sustainability.
