The program seeks to educate pre-service as well as in-service students with the appropriate knowledge and skills for employment and advanced study. The mission of the criminal justice program at Savannah State University is in concert with the University and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences which states that the mission of an "undergraduate program in criminal justice is to educate students to be critical thinkers who can communicate their thoughts effectively. Programs should familiarize students with facts and concepts and teach students to apply this knowledge to related problems and changing situations." Criminal justice at Savannah State University is the interdisciplinary study of the typology of crime and criminal behavior, crime prevention, crime causation, and crime control in society. Graduates are expected to have the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude for becoming a "change agent" in the criminal justice system.
The Criminal Justice Program provides an understanding of how the criminal justice system functions, theory versus practice, and to introduce students to the basic knowledge that scholarship has produced concerning crime and the administration of justice. Our purpose is to prepare students with analytical, critical thinking, writing skills and technology skills in order to function in graduate and professional schools, and professional careers. Graduates usually assume professional careers within the criminal justice system or matriculate to the study of law or other graduate degrees.
