Explore the connections between food, culture, social policy, and the environment in the bachelor's degree program in food studies at The New School.

The Food Studies BA/BS degree is offered through The New School's Bachelor's Program for Adults and Transfer Students. Led by our expert faculty, you'll explore subjects ranging from food-growing practices and food marketing to global food security and public health issues like obesity and malnutrition. Partnerships with advocacy organizations and culinary schools enable you to supplement your classroom learning with hands-on experience.

Drawing on a number of disciplines, including anthropology, economics, gastronomy, systems design, and public policy analysis, the program prepares you to implement positive changes in food systems by engaging with processes of production, distribution, consumption, and regulation.

A mobility agreement with the International Culinary Center (ICC) in New York City enables ICC students admitted to the bachelor?s program to receive transfer credits for their ICC studies and allows New School students to take ICC courses.

New York City is your laboratory for learning, providing unmatched opportunities to explore contemporary food issues. The city has one of the largest wholesale food markets in the nation and is headquarters to numerous NGOs with interests in food, health, and the environment. Here, civic action groups and policymakers work directly with local food producers and food advocates.

The New School also connects you to a network of students from around the world through a wide range of food studies courses offered online. These courses are open to all students in the Bachelor's Program for Adults and Transfer Students, as well as continuing education students on a credit or noncredit basis.

Career Opportunities

The degree in food studies is a pathway to careers and graduate study in food policy research and advocacy, environmentally sustainable agriculture, urban policy analysis and management, food marketing and distribution, public relations, and business administration for governments, NGOs, culinary journalism, and food and culinary businesses.
