- The Integrated English Language Arts major prepares students to teach writing, literature, grammar, usage, speech, media, and journalism in junior and senior high schools (grades 7–12).
- For nearly a century, Miami University has been offering programs to prepare teachers for the classroom. Today's preparation focuses on meeting the needs of contemporary schools, families, and communities. Miami’s teacher education programs are widely recognized for their quality, and teacher education ranks among the top 10 programs at Miami for the number of majors.
- For this major, students will take a variety of courses in literature, writing, communication, and journalism, and they’ll get involved in classroom field observation their first year. A specific teaching method sequence students a junior year and intern teaching their senior year help them become proficient in teaching as well as flexible and creative in thinking about the integrated language arts.
- This program also requires students to take classes within the Global Miami Plan for Liberal Education. Through the plan's foundation courses, students will hone skills such as thinking critically, understanding contexts, reflecting and acting, and engaging with other learners. These courses are in the broad discipline areas of English composition, fine arts, humanities, social science, world cultures, natural science, formal reasoning, and in the social foundations of education. The principles and content of the foundation are the basis for the professional education sequence and content specialization.
