  • Students in LMU's Sociology major develop the intellectual skills to examine and understand the patterns of relationships that form the foundation of society. As a discipline concerned with the causes and consequences of individual participation in groups, Sociology majors study the units such as families, neighborhoods, political parties, and ethnic groups that make it possible for people to develop networks of interaction, meaning, and identity. Students learn the significance of cultural differences in traditional and modern societies, the origin and development of theoretical ideas that inform contemporary sociological inquiry, and the basic methodological and statistical strategies used in contemporary sociology.
  • The Sociology Department aims to foster the intellectual development of students and to promote lifelong learning experiences. Through coursework, we expect the students to develop what C. Wright Mills called the “sociological imagination,” or the ability to recognize and assess how social forces shape the lives of individuals in a changing and complex world.
  • The curriculum is designed to help students to explore relationships in society, the social and cultural dimensions of human behavior, the dynamics of interaction, social institutions and groups, and social change in a global context. Upon completing the major, students are equipped with the necessary analytical and methodological skills to help solve contemporary real-world problems and are prepared for graduate study and careers in a range of fields.
