The study of History teaches students to understand both the past and the present: the past, by investigating how people lived their lives and understood their worlds; the present, by understanding where we come from. A History degree offers students the unique perspective offered by studying the past and by understanding the role the past plays in the present. The History curriculum allows students to study a broad range of times and places, but they can also choose a Concentration to focus on a particular area of interest.
- A History degree gives students the unique perspective acquired by studying the past and by understanding how the past is reflected and refracted in the present. The LMU History curriculum will train students to be alert, critical, and inquisitive – a careful and keen researcher and writer. Studying a broad range of places and times, students will become an informed global citizen, able to participate in public life with articulate, effective, and persuasive arguments. Student's own research will demonstrate that historical interpretations are always changing, while their ability to make sense of complex problems will make them effective decision-makers. When students graduate, they will be prepared to follow any career they choose, armed with knowledge, skepticism, empathy, eloquence – and perspective.
