The undergraduate program includes coursework in studio art, visual studies, art education methods, clinical experiences, and general education. Art Education students begin their first year taking the same studio Foundations program as other visual arts majors. Students obtain a wide range of studio skills and concentrate on a single studio area, selected from ceramics, drawing, fine metals, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and time based/experimental media. Visual Studies courses provide opportunities to understand art, design, and visual culture from historical, critical, and philosophical positions. Students will be introduced to schools through classroom observations, arts days, and field experiences, culminating with the final clinical experience where students spend an entire semester teaching art in the K-12 schools under the guidance of a master teacher.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the B.S. in Art Education program are prepared for certification to teach art in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Credentials are also recognized in most other states.
