The multifaceted program blends classroom instruction with required clinical rotations where students obtain real life experience working hands-on with certified athletic trainers, physicians, physical therapists, and other allied health care professionals to provide patient care. The rigorous curriculum prepares students to take the national BOC board exam?(Board of Certification Exam).??
A degree in Athletic Training and BOC certification offers graduates opportunities to practice in a variety of clinical settings. These settings include, but are not limited to, high school, college, and professional athletics, outpatient clinics, industrial rehabilitation sites, physician practices, the performing arts, safety settings, and higher education.
Once a student has been admitted to Marshall University and declared athletic training as their major, they must complete specific prerequisite courses to apply for admission into the Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training Program (admission criteria).?Acceptance into the PMSATP is competitive and separate from acceptance to Marshall University.?The 2015-2016 academic year marked the last year students were admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training Program. In July 2016, the first class of students were admitted to the Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training Program.
This new program is organized in a 3 + 2 structure. This means that during the student?s first three years at Marshall University or other regionally accredited institution, he/she would be taking the required MU core/general studies courses in addition to the courses that are required to apply to the PMSATP including: Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Nutrition, Personal Health/ Wellness, Medical Terminology, Statistics, First Aid & CPR, and Introduction to Athletic Training. During these first three years, students could also elect to take pre-requisite courses that are needed to apply to Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician?s Assistant, or Medical School.
