As an English major, student will:
- Develop a broad understanding of the social, historical, religious, and political contexts of American, British, and global literature
- Analyze and interpret literary and critical texts that raise issues and questions of social justice, values, meaning, race, class, gender, ethnicity, and global and cultural diversity
- Benefit from small class sizes in a close-knit community that fosters collaboration and creativity
- Gain personalized attention and mentorship from accomplished faculty
- Take innovative courses, such as Literature of Illness and Healing, Writing Flash Fiction, and Writing and Identity
- Compliment one’s studies with interdisciplinary courses in disability, health, sports, and media

- Enrich your education through involvement with the English Club, Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society, and Her Campus (the premier global community for college women writers)
- Gain experience writing, editing, and publishing through an internship with Vista’s Magazine, SHU’s online literary journal, or Mud Magazine, an internship program founded by SHU English alum, Hector Gutierrez
- Have the chance to showcase research in The Sacred Heart University Scholar, an e-journal dedicated to the research of our undergraduate students.
- Prepare for the job market through creation of research projects, scholarly papers, creative writing projects, and work in publishing

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- Academic performance in high school.
- Co-curricular activities such as athletics, club and organization participation, volunteerism, and involvement in the arts.
- Personal qualities and interests that will allow one to make a unique addition to the Sacred Heart community.
- SHU is a test-optional institution. One may elect to submit SAT or ACT scores for consideration; however, there is no requirement to do so.
Indian Eligibility:
- Academic performance in high school.
- For all non-native English speakers, an official score report of an English language proficiency examination—or acceptable waiver—is required.
