Master of Arts [M.A] [Musicology] From University of Denver

Courses focus on the study of music in its historical, analytical and cultural contexts. Master's theses may focus on topics drawn from a variety of sub-disciplines, including historical musicology, popular music studies, jazz history and ethnomusicology.

Designed to foster critical thinkers and writers, the MA in musicology offers a wide range of courses in classical and vernacular Western and non-Western music. Courses focus on the study of music in its historical, analytical and cultural contexts. Master's theses may focus on topics drawn from a variety of subdisciplines, including historical musicology, popular music studies, jazz history and ethnomusicology. The thesis is written under the supervision of a faculty mentor.

This program is designed to develop advanced musical, scholarly and intellectual skills. Master's candidates also may pursue a dual degree with any of the Master of Music concentrations. Training to be a music scholar challenges students to learn discipline, collaboration and creative thinking while developing emotional intelligence. These skills and abilities prepare students for successful careers not only in musicology, but also a variety of other fields within and beyond music.
