Course Curriculum

10

  • My course was a mix of both theory and practical.
  • It's well curated. It brushes your basic skills first and moves to advanced courses and practicals.
  • Sometimes one a day or 2 a day. They can be in the morning as early as 9am or as late as 6:30 - 10pm. And you will have a 4-hour class per subject per week. So each subject will be held once a week only. It leaves you ample time to finish the assignments given to finish at home.
  • Number of students varied for each subject. minimum of 3 to a maximum of 12. I was the only Indian student for my course.

Admission Experience

  • Pratt Institute - Admitted.
  • New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) - Admitted.
  • Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) - Admitted.
  • Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD) – Rejected. I am from Information Technology (BE IT) background, and I think the university wanted someone with a design background already. Example BA student or a BFA student.
  • School of Visual Arts (SVA) – Rejected. Same as above.
  • I absolutely liked how the curriculum was curated. As i mentioned earlier, I am from a different background, and learning everything basic before going for a master's was a little tough. This curriculum helped me learn from basics to advanced.
  • Application process was very easy. While applying, i was asked to upload a few documents, including my IELTS score, marksheets, Birth certificate, passport, portfolio, etc., and a $50 application fee was charged. Once I got the admit, I was sent a few more documents to fill, which included immunisation. TB tests, MMR, etc., were supposed to be shown.
  • For Design, I had to submit a portfolio and IELTS (6.5+). But for STEM courses, I think they require GRE test scores as well.
  • Once I had all the documents ready, there was no problem in applying. It went in one go.
  • I applied for Spring semester. Since my course was 60 credits, I didn't want to rush and finish everything within 4 semesters. It would have been a lot to handle each semester, considering working on the thesis alongside. So I applied for Spring which gave me a bonus semester and I also graduated with the people who applied for Fall.
  • After I applied, I heard the decision in 2 months.

Faculty

10

  • 12 students to one faculty ratio. Personal attention is given to each student.
  • Yes, they design wise, they helped us generate our resume, business cards, letterheads etc. so that if we want to start our own business, it would help us.
  • Yes, the faculty is very co-operative and since they have a lot of network and tie-ups with different companies, it helps finding an internship. Also, there is a portal of our school where all the open positions for on-campus jobs are listed, so it helps for learn and earn at the same time.
  • Our department chair. Mr. Kevin. He is very intelligent and he pushes every student to get out of the comfort zone. He also make the students participate in hackathons and other competitions so that we can experience real life problems and find solutions to those.

Campus Life

10

  • NYC and Old Westbury. Everything is available at both the campuses.
  • The school celebrates all festivals for all diverse communities. Celebrating Indian Festivals like Diwali, hispanic festivals, halloween etc is celebrated. There are several clubs hosted by different communities. You can sign up for multiple clubs.
  • There are sport teams and games like baseball, etc., are played.

Part Time Jobs

  • It depends on your professor's impression of you. You have to be dedicated to the work they assign.
  • It varies from $15 to $28
  • 20 hours per week is allowed during school. May increase during holidays. Working Off-campus is not encouraged.
  • You should be very attentive when a job is posted and apply as soon as you can. You can set an alert so that it notifies you when a new job opening is posted. But there are enough on-campus jobs.
  • $15-$28. only on-campus jobs are allowed for a student. You can always ask your professors for help or also lookout for job portals like Handshake, where the new open job positions for part-time are listed. YOu can apply and wait to hear back. Once it is done, you fill in the paperwork and get some additional documents and then start with the job.

Placement

8

  • It entirely depends on your hard work applying to the positions. There are numerous websites like LinkedIn, Handshake, Indeed, etc., where you can apply for jobs. Faculty and staff also guide you and help you connect with different companies they are tied with and help you secure jobs.
  • they do not have a legit campus recruitment thing like we have in India. We have to take our own efforts to get an interview.
  • Companies – pentagon, disney, summer groups, design studios, etc.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • There are groups on facebook and whatsapp to find temporary as well as permanent accommodations. ANd there are apps as well, but sometimes it can also be fraud. Happened to one of my friends.
  • I found mine with the help of my friend who was already in the States.
  • My monthly rent for a private room was $850, including all the utilities like gas, water, wifi, etc.
  • Join the facebook groups, contact Indian students who already reside there and try to connect with them via linkedIn and they can easily help you. I have been helping a lot of aspiring students myself who text me on LinkedIn. My accommodation was off campus.

Exams

  • Language Proficiency Tests like TOEFL or IELTS are compulsory. If you don't have that, you will have to take a language (English) subject in addition to your curriculum.
  • Rest of the exam scores depend on your type of field. I had to provide a portfolio since my course was design. Similarly, it will vary for business schools and schools of engineering.
  • Statement of Purpose - 1, Letter of Recommendations - 2 to 3, are required.
  • No interview.

Fees

  • Fees is credit wise... $1400 per credit. Since my course was an MFA course, I had 60 credits.
  • You have to pay your fees semester wise which includes the sum of credits taken. While paying, there is an option of paying the money for the semester all together or pay in 3 installments. They charge $45 extra to choose the second option.
  • Rent, transportation and groceries sum up to about $1000-$1200 monthly in jersey city.

Scholarship

  • Yes, I received a scholarship of $3000 per year, which was later deducted from my tuition fees.
  • I didn't have to apply for it separately. IT was included in my application itself. So when I received the admission letter from the university, it came with the scholarship announcement. But one can also apply for it additionally under FAFSA, which stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It is available on the website nyit.edu
