What Students Say
Likes
- Campus life, beautiful campus which includes peaceful trails to walk on.
- Reacreation activities, a 5 storey gym along with indoor sports.
- Interactive classes/lectures, to help get a better understanding.
Dislikes
- Nothing specific, really had a good time in my Master's :)
Course Curriculum
- The course syllabus is pretty much up to date along with the basic fundamentals to get started.
- Yes, had the opportunity to research on a topic related to Forensics.
- If you rephrase the question to ""Scheduled in a week"", that would be 3-4 classes scheduled in a week. They can be 2 hours or 1 hour and typically take place either in morinings, afternoons or even evenings. The last class of a typical day would start at 7pm.
- It varies, I was enrolled in classes with a strength as low as 20 students as well as enrolled in classes with almost 100 students in it. “
Admission Experience
- This was one of the fewest universities to offer a master's program in Cyber Security. With Cyber Security being a hot field in IT and with Charlotte being the home to some of the big banks in the country, I felt UNCC was the right place to be in.
- I applied to my University in 2020, the required exams was either TOEFL or IELTS, I ended up giving IELTS. GRE was waived during that time due to COVID-19.
- Some of the documents include a Statement of Purpose, 2 LORs from my mentors/professors, a resume and my undergraduate marks sheet.
Faculty
- While students win in the Faculty-Student ratio, the faculties were very approachable and friendly too. Whenever we had any doubts, they use to always respond to us with a potential solution no matter what time of the day we do so.
- There was this professor named Thomas Moyer who was one of the best professors I learnt from. His classes were so good that in the entire semester, his class had the highest footfall.
Campus Life
- In Charlotte, we have our campuses in two areas in the city with one and the main one being in the University city, and the other building located in the downtown area.
- There are numerous clubs in the university and I was part of a Cyber Security club which was a popular technical club in the university.
- The central library is a perfect place to sit and study. And of course, the sports facilities and gym are top notch.
Part Time Jobs
- In Charlotte, on campus jobs start with at least $9/hour and typically you would need to work 20 hours/week.
- There is a part time job portal in the university where students can apply for various positions. Maximum 20 hours a week. It depends on the type of job, if you were to apply for a dining place, cafe, or store, it is not that difficult. But if you were to apply for TA, RA positions, it can be challenging as there is competition.
- After the first semester of your master's, there is a decent number of students who secure such roles.
Placement
- I do not have an exact percentage on that, but 90% of the people I know have secured jobs in the US.
- The average salary could be anywhere between $80,000 - $100,000 depending on role and experience.
- While there is no concept of campus placements in the US, there are career fairs which give you the opportunity to network and learn about the company visiting. Otherwise, 99% of the students job hunt on job portals like LinkedIN and Indeed.
- Networking can also be a benefit for job search as you can attend certain meetups where you can meet different people from different companies who can help you with a referral.
Accommodation
- - Through facebook community posts. Rent was around $450 a month with water included. Electricity was separate but not more than $10/person (4 of us in 1 house).
Exams
- Required Scores: GRE 310+ (Waived during my time of admission due to COVID-19), IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 95
- My Scores: GRE 318, IELTS 7.0
Fees
- For 2 years, it was almost $35,000 in total
