Reason for choosing my college

  • There are many resources available to the students, like tutoring, scholarship guidance, and many international clubs and organisations for students to feel welcomed at the university.
  • There are abundant graduate assistantship positions provided where students can apply to get on-campus jobs.
  • At any given point, there is at least one event going on campus and going to help to improve the network and build a community on campus.
  • There are a lot of cafeterias and different kinds of foods available with a variety of cuisines.
  • If the students are doing any kind of research they will be funded by the department there are several other sources of funding also available.

Tips to enhance your application

To enhance the application, one has to have solid backing of whatever they are putting on the application and the application has to have all the materials ready at the time of submitting it.

Admission Experience

  • From a very young age, during school days, it was my dream to go to the United States. My sister was also doing her PhD at the same university, which motivated me to join this university.
  • I wanted to join Data Analytics because my bachelor was Bachelor of Commerce (Hons), and I had an interest in computer applications, which has inspired me to join Ms in Data Analytics.
  • This university is located in the university town of Las Cruces, NM. Most of the population here is either retired or a student at the university. Data analytics has many career opportunities if utilised well.
  • My overall experience with the university was very well-rounded, one with great emphasis on academics, leadership and extracurricular activities.

Class Schedule

10

The schedule depends on what classes the students are registering for. The responsibility of registering classes that do not conflict with each other falls on the student. There are typically six classes per week, and the average strength of the class is usually 15 - 20 students, and in my degree, there are around 20 - 25 Indian students. Apart from class, daily, 3-4 hours go into daily study and self-study.

Faculty

9

The faculty is usually accommodating to the students. They usually provide one-on-one solutions if the students have any problems. The faculty are very approachable; all one needs to do is schedule an appointment before meeting them. I personally like Dr. Marshall Taylor, his explanation of class and how he teaches are very practical.

Campus Life

10

There are around 10-12 campuses dedicated to each department and the campus is very big. I, myself was part of many organizations. I was Treasurer for the Graduate Student Council, Vice President of the International Club, Vice President of the Graduate School Council, Advisor for the Indian Student Association, Member of the Asian, and Pacific Islander Communities, Graduate Senator for the Associated Students of New Mexico State University, and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.

Part Time Jobs

  • Most of the Indian students can find the jobs on campus. There are so many jobs available that all the students can find the position. It is difficult; the student must make an effort.
  • I have found on-campus jobs every semester sometimes, I got a year-long contract. They are not that difficult as long as one makes the effort. The students usually have to apply on a website called Handshake, and they have to spread the resume to the particular department.

There are many on-campus positions available. The student has to make efforts to identify them and apply for them. The hourly wage is around $17, and the maximum hrs of work allowed per week is 20 hrs.

Placement

4

That usually depends on the degree applying to. The current job market is very down. There are not too many jobs. The average salary is around 70000-85000 and typically students can find jobs through LinkedIn and other websites.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

I have rented a two-bedroom apartment 2 blocks away from campus. I have just searched for apartments for rentals near campus, which gave me a list. It is particularly difficult to rent an apartment immediately after coming to the States as there is no rental history. All the Apartments here require an additional person to co-sign the lease due to the lack. hence, I would recommend getting in contact with someone who is already there for their help while joining.
