Course Curriculum
8
- My course was very difficult, as it was a totally engineering and technical course. when i was studying, they were more focused on theory, but some subjects' faculties focus on practical also.
- There are so many aspects, and a study will only give you positive aspects, as you will learn and grow in life. Timing were good like in morning from 9:00 to 11:00 after that break in afternoon 14:00 to 17:00 3 days in week. Average strength was around 40-50 students. In my course there were i think 10-13 Indians with me.
Admission Experience
- I have applied to 2 universities in the United Kingdom, and i got offer letters, meaning shortlists, from both universities. The first was Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh and Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow. I have taken admission to Glasgow Caledonian University. No universities have rejected my application. I got offer letters from both universities which i have applied for. I chose Glasgow Caledonian University because that University has less fees and the course was more related to my past study background.
- I chose Glasgow Caledonian University because it was offering me a course which i wanted to study. Regarding the admission process, it is simple: you have to apply for the course which you want to study with all necessary documents. If you get fit for the course, they will send you a conditional offer letter in which they will ask for conditions if they need additional documents or something like that, if you agree with those conditions and accept the offer, they will send you an unconditional offer letter after that you have to pay the fee deposit amount to secure admission, and after paying, they will send you a CAS letter, and your admission is confirmed.
- Eligibility criteria when i have applied that time were that you should have passed from an English-medium background in the last 2 years. Now they change to a 6-band IELTS score. Overall, the admission process was simple; I doesn't have any kind of big challenges.
- I applied for the January 2023 intake. Talking about admission process, if you want to apply in Glasgow Caledonian University, you have to apply 3-4 months prior of starting course as whole process takes time. If you apply very late then maybe you didn't get offer on time and you have to make changes in your plans.
- First you submit application with documents then they will verify that will take around 20 to 30 days depending upon month you applied after that conditional offer will come and you will accept the condition then one week time for unconditional offer, then you pay the fees and send proof to university then CAS later will take time to come around 15-20 days same depending on month.
Faculty
6
- If i talk about the faculty-to-student ratio, it was very low. Faculties were not enough because mostly we were studying in combined classes, as some other courses have the same kind of subjects, so they combine classes.
- Faculties make PPT or word file to present; they just read and explain a little bit. Sometimes they say that it's easy and you can get by yourself. No, faculties don't support finding part-time jobs, as they don't even think about you after class ends.
Campus Life
8
- My university has 2 campuses in the United Kingdom; the main one is in Glasgow and otherone in London. My campus had facilities like a library, canteen, and gym. They do celebrations when exams are over, they do "exam over" parties, and they do Christmas parties.
- In my university there was a GISA community that hosted the parties for Indian students who were studying at the university. University was doing a job expo for students so that they can find jobs; they can meet companies directly.
Part Time Jobs
- I don't know about asian student who secure jobs as teaching assistants. As, in my university, there were mostly Scottish teachers and some from other countries. I have seen some university Teaching Assistant role offers with 2300 to 2700 pounds salary per month. You can work 40 hrs per week maximum. For a part-time job, it all depends on how you perform in the interview. As I was working part-time at McDonald's, it was good to work.
- Uk has a minimum wage set according to age; if you are older then 21 you will get 11.44 pounds per hour. When i was working in McDonald's, I was getting 11.80/hr. You can earn around 800 to 900 pounds per month. If you search with good potential, it is easy to find a job, and you don't depend on others to secure a job. Students can apply for part-time jobs from the company website as i was working at McDonald's, i applied from the McDonald's uk website were all job vacancies are available.
Placement
6
- After graduation, most students start jobs outside of their field, as finding a field job is a little difficult in the United Kingdom. They usually start working full-time where they used to have a part-time job.
- After searching for months, they find an internship in some field. My batchmates mostly came back to India, as there were not field jobs as Electrical engineer. The major companies were Scottish power, Scotland Rail.
Accommodation
Off Campus
8
- First accommodation i found with the help of an agent known as University Living had a monthly rent of 1500 pounds and we 4 members were living there and utilities bills were not included.
- Major challenges that i had faced were rent; in Glasgow City Centre there was very high rent, other then that difficulties were finding the right flatmate. If anybody wants to move to the United Kingdom, you can use spareroom.com, airbnb to find accommodation. My accommodation was not far from the University it was 1.3 miles away.
Exams
- IELTS, PTE and TOFEL are accepted to take admission in Glasgow Caledonian University. Documents which are necessary is SOP that is State of Purpose, LOR from university which you studied, you Resume, all education documents specifically Certificate and Transcripts are mandatory.
- Glasgow Caledonian University doesn't take interview of all students who are applying they will only take interview incase they have any doubt. But they will only ask general questions like why you want to come to UK for studies and some questions related to course.
Fees
- The fee structure was simple; for confirming the admission, we have to pay a deposit, which is returned in the university offer letter. After that you can file for a visa. And the remaining fees were paid before the end of the course. Like we have options to choose whether we want to pay monthly EMI or semester-wise.
- The estimation for living there is around 500 pounds, in which 350 pounds is for rent, around 90 to 100 pounds for transportation and other food and 50-60 pounds for small costs. But if you live on a sharing basis, it may be less.
Scholarship
- My university was offering a 2000 pounds scholarship for new international students. There are also other scholarships for different countries. I only received a 2000 pounds scholarship.
- My fees were 14500 pounds but I paid 12500 pounds after deduction of scholarships. Mostly Glasgow Caledonian University is offering scholarships to new students; it attracts students more.
