Course Curriculum

8

  • The course curriculum could be rated as moderate to tough, with the first semester focusing heavily on the theoretical concepts with light touch on the practical sides on the labs, with second trimester it becomes very research driven and more practical work alongside innovation is expected. The rules for plagiarism are very strict and can even lead to early termination from the program.
  • The positive aspect about the course was I was able to learn the concepts that I can use immediately in real time in the job market, the cons I would say was I wish we had a longer tenure on the course since 1 year masters is really fast and almost everything seems to go very fast.
  • There were 5-6 indian students in my class, and overall no particular country had a majority in the cohort since my cohort had students from 17 countries.

Admission Experience

  • Applied in 6 uni’s :-
    University of Glasgow (Admitted)
    University of Aberdeen (Admitted)
    TU Darmstadt (Rejected)
    FH Sudwestfalen (Rejected)
    University of Hull (Admitted)
    University of Rennes 1 (Admitted)

  • I think the major reason I faced with german universities where I was rejected was conversion of indian grades into german grades, so beyond grades the german universities did not care much and although I had 74% in my UG based on the german university conversions that was pretty average whereas some friends from deemed universities who had a gpa 8 or above were accepted.
  • I chose Hull over others because it was fairly reasonable in terms of the tuition fees and given the rankings it was still good QS top 500 so for under 15lakhs that was a good deal for me, besides the alumni network was good for the university and it had all the features that a top university should have, so I was happy to trade off big cities like London with Hull since small town made it cheaper to live and I know the quality I would be getting for studies would be good.
  • IELTS is accepted and GRE, I had IELTS overall of 8 but the minimum cut off is 6.5 and GRE is preferred but there is no specific cut off, although UG marks are heavily focussed upon.
  • I applied directly to the university and did not use any agents and would say it was a seamless process from application to admit to getting CAS for student visa, it was everything I would expect from them.
  • September 2022. The application to decide takes around 6 weeks and I got my admit letter in 5 weeks. After securing an admission a token amount of tuition fees is to be paid so that the university issues CAS for visa purposes and that can take 4-5 weeks after paying the token tuition fees. All in all it can take 3 months from applying to securing CAS and then proceeding for the visa application

Faculty

8

  • The faculty to student ratio is fairly consistent, in my batch it was 1:15-20. Some subjects might have common lectures with other courses and there the batches are split into 1,2,3 and so on. But usually the university makes sure that any cohort of a program doesn't go upto 100 or above since they want to focus on every student and faculties usually remember pro active students.
  • The faculties don't help students with finding part time or full time jobs as student futures is a dedicated team in the university that advises on these matters.
  • I admire my professor of organization accounting and control the most given his teaching methods were quite interactive and also being so busy with his schedule he was able to hand out appointments to the students to help us clear our doubts.

Campus Life

10

  • My university has a single campus, which is quite big and has all the facilities that a student can dream from 24 hours library to engineering labs with mainframe computers and further for sports we had a rugby field, swimming pool, volley ball, football, tennis etc overall we had more than 100 sports and activity clubs available on campus.
  • There was not much of a fest culture in my university but more of a pub night on a Wednesday where we would have karaoke and sort of like a mini night club with discounted drinks and food for students.

Part Time Jobs

  • There is no system for TA/RA/DA in UK and Europe so students that work part time are expected to find work with local businesses as the visa allows them to work 20 hours maximum per week during term time. It is the responsibility of the student and the employer to ensure the visa conditions are not breached. It is very difficult to find a part time job on campus since they are mostly seasonal and last only 1-2 weeks for eg library helper to campus ambassador.
  • The national minimum wage of the UK is paid per hour to students which increases every year in April and it is usually different for the rest of UK and London so it is always above 11-12 pounds a hour. The part time job hunting process is quite similar to full time roles, jobsites like indeed, totaljobs are used and apply for positions, alternatively you can walk into local shops with a copy of your CV as per UK standards and have a chat and they can consider you for a job if they have any available.

Placement

6

  • Usually 10-15% graduates find a job within 6 months of graduation and the major source is networking and online job boards since UK education system does not focus on placements, so the university student services can help with mock interviews, CV tailoring, Cover letters but it is the responsibility of the student on what they want to do post studies as some follow their personal passion, hence seeking employment is not university services based.
  • The companies too don't go to campuses to hire students, there is a system of job fair where companies set up their stalls and explain what the company does and why students should consider working for them, but that is it. The stall representative can be contacted for questions when applying to the company but again no sort of placement drives. The companies that usually visited Hull were Reckitt, Unilever, Barclays, EY, JP Morgan, Airbus, Lloyds Banking Group, East Yorkshire Police, WHSmith, KPMG, RSM, ABB

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • I took the on campus accommodation since I didn't trust external websites being in India for the UK. The annual fees for my accommodation was 8500 GBP which was fairly reasonable for the amenities included as wifi, electricity and water bills were all inclusive. Furthermore I got a good blend of people from different courses sharing the same kitchen so had a good chance to network alongside and relax after a days of study.
  • Most Indian students stayed off campus as it was relatively cheaper but then again they missed out on the opportunity to network and build friendships with people from all across the world. There are certain student accommodation letting agents once in town, people directly used them to secure off campus accommodation

Exams

  • IELTS. The UG transcripts are needed, with SOP, 3 LOR and a CV detailing projects, work experience and extra curriculum activities. Interviews depend on a case by case basis, sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn't.
  • My SOP was strong enough and my grades were good so I didn't have to go through an interview process. If an interview is to be conducted usually the admission team sends out an email and then one of the faculties from the department does it for 15-30 mins to get clarity on SOP and fit with the university program. It happens over teams and the admission team will make sure to fill you in on the information if you are called for it.

Fees

  • Tuition was 9750 GBP which was for the whole year, payable in 3 trimesters and my hostel was 7200 GBP with kitchen sharing. This was payable across 8 months For groceries to cook food you can estimate 150-200 GBP this changes with the city living in. For transportation another 100 GBP is sufficient as local buses have discounts for students and even on trains it is 1/3rd off. There is no mess service like indian colleges so you are yourself responsible for cooking your meals
  • If going out once a while with friends you can factor in 50-60 GBP depending on the location

Scholarship

  • No, there wasn't any scholarship for the program. The program was open to applicants with commonwealth scholarships and stuff like that which home countries' governments pay. for, but I didn't see any of my classmates on scholarship or grants.
  • There is no TA/RA system in Europe and UK for master's hence there isn't a part time earning from university. The department will post voluntary paid work but that is only for specific weeks or days so that can't be relied upon as a regular source of income.
