The Master Programme in English at Uppsala University is a two-year programme comprising three specialisations: English language and linguistics, English literature, and American literature and culture. You study one of these specialisations. The issues treated in the essay sub_mitted with the application and the method used must be relevant to the selected specialisation of the Master?s programme. You will be trained in methods of research and in advanced academic writing.
The programme consists of core modules and electives taught by field specialists through a combination of seminars and written assignments.
There are a great number of stimulating course modules to choose from. For example, you can decide to immerse yourself in second language acquisition, in issues concerning language and society or world Englishes. If you are interested in literature and culture there are courses like Literature and Terrorism, Post_modern Literature, and Imagining America; Nationhood, Nationality, and Citizenship.
English Language
The English language and linguistics specialisation is oriented towards empirical research in, for example, corpus li_nguistics, sociolinguistics, and English as a foreign language.
English Literature
The English Literature specialisation focuses on historical and theoretical transitions in English li_terature from Shakespeare to post_modernism and beyond, including ge_ndered and postcolonial critiques.
American Literature and Culture
The main focus of the American literature specialisation lies on changes in literary concerns, t_hema_tic as well as aesthetic, from the American renaissance to the post-postmodern.
Career
The programme prepares you for careers that require solid knowledge and skills as well as academic training in the subject of English. These include positions in higher education, schools, museums, archives, libraries, publishing companies, governmental authorities, government ministries, tourism, media (journalism, translation, for instance), and the EU (interpretation).
