Indian students who missed the Fall 2026 intake — or are planning ahead for January 2027 — have a narrowing window to act. Applications for Spring and Winter 2027 intakes are already open across six major study destinations, with Germany's safe application deadline just two weeks away and Australia's February 2027 intake accepting applications now. The window is not closed. But for several countries, it is closing faster than most students realise.

This is also the last Spring intake cycle before two significant policy shifts take effect: the UK Graduate Route drops from 2 years to 18 months for visa applications from January 1, 2027, and Germany's new 70% Class XII minimum for APS certification applies to all Winter 2026/27 applicants. Students who apply now — with the right documents — can still secure a January or February 2027 start across multiple destinations.

Spring 2027 Intake for Indian Students

Germany Winter 2026/27: The Deadline Is Closer Than You Think

Germany's Winter Semester 2026/27 begins in October 2026, and the official Uni-Assist application deadline for most German public universities is July 15, 2026. But for Indian students, the real deadline is earlier — and it has already arrived.

The bottleneck is the APS certificate, mandatory for all Indian applicants to German universities. Under normal conditions, APS processing takes 3–4 weeks. During peak season (May–August), it can stretch to 3 months. Working backwards from the July 15 Uni-Assist deadline, May 2026 is the last safe month to apply for APS. Students who have not yet applied are already in the danger zone.

A new rule effective March 15, 2026 adds another filter: undergraduate applicants must have a minimum of 70% in Class XII to qualify for APS certification. Master's applicants are not affected by this threshold.

University Winter 2026/27 Deadline Status (May 2026)
LMU Munich July 15, 2026 Open
RWTH Aachen July 15, 2026 (portal opened May 4) Open now
KIT Karlsruhe July 15, 2026 Open
University of Stuttgart July 15, 2026 (portal opened May 15) Open now
Freie Universität Berlin May 31, 2026 Closes in 4 weeks
Humboldt University Berlin June 1–July 15, 2026 Open — check programme

Beyond the application deadline, Indian students must also open a blocked account of €11,904 (~₹13.2 lakh) before their visa appointment — a process that takes 2–4 weeks. The German student visa itself takes 6–10 weeks to process after the VFS appointment. Students who receive admission letters in late July and book VFS appointments immediately may still arrive after the October semester start.

The action required this week: Apply for APS at aps-india.de (fee: ₹18,000). Begin blocked account setup. Finalise your university shortlist and check programme-specific deadlines — not just the July 15 standard date.

Australia February 2027: Primary Intake, Applications Open Now

Australia's February/March 2027 intake is the country's primary intake — the equivalent of Fall in the US — and applications are open now at several leading Australian universities. With Australia allocating 295,000 student visa spots for 2027 (25,000 more than the prior year), the intake is actively accepting international applicants.

University February 2027 Application Deadline Status
University of Melbourne November 30, 2026 (UG); August 31, 2026 (PG timely) Open now
UNSW Sydney December 15, 2026 Open now
Most universities October–November 2026 Open now

One important cost note for Indian students: Australia's Temporary Graduate Visa fee doubled to AUD 4,600 (~₹2.96 lakh) on March 1, 2026. This is a post-study cost that must be factored into the total investment calculation. The student visa fee itself stands at AUD 2,000 (~₹1.29 lakh) — the highest of any major destination.

UK January 2027: The Last Intake Before the Graduate Route Cuts

The UK's January 2027 intake carries a specific urgency that no other destination does this cycle. From January 1, 2027, the Graduate Route post-study work visa drops from 2 years to 18 months for Bachelor's and Master's graduates — confirmed in UK Immigration Rules HC 1691. The cut applies to the date of the visa application, not the graduation date.

Students starting a 1-year Master's in January 2027 and graduating in late 2027 or early 2028 will apply for the Graduate Route after January 1, 2027 — meaning they receive 18 months, not 2 years. This is a 25% reduction in post-study work time, at exactly the moment the Skilled Worker visa salary threshold has risen to £38,700.

Applications for UK universities for the January 2027 intake open approximately June 2026, with most deadlines falling between September and November 2026. Students should begin shortlisting programmes and preparing documents now — IELTS scores, transcripts, and personal statements — so applications can be submitted the moment portals open.

In 2025, Indian nationals received 90,153 Graduate Route extensions — 42% of all grants made in the year, the highest share of any nationality. The cut directly affects the largest cohort of international graduates using this route.

Ireland, Canada and the US: Also Open, Longer Windows

Three further destinations have Spring/Winter 2027 applications open now, with less immediate urgency but clear action timelines:

Country Intake Application Deadline Post-Study Work Key Note
Ireland January 2027 August–October 2026 24 months (no sponsorship required) Applications open now; tech employer hub — Google, Meta, Apple all Dublin-based
Canada January 2027 September–November 2026 PGWP up to 3 years Douglas College confirmed open; study permit rejection rate was 80% for Indians in 2025 — apply early
USA Spring 2027 (January) Oct–Nov 2026 (most) OPT 12 months + STEM OPT 24 months Virginia Tech: Sep 1; UIUC: Oct 1; ASU: Nov 1 priority deadline; fewer programmes than Fall

Ireland is the strongest Spring 2027 option for Indian students targeting technology, data science, or pharmaceutical science. The 24-month post-study work period — longer than the UK's current 2-year Graduate Route and significantly longer than the 18 months it becomes from January 2027 — combined with direct access to European tech headquarters in Dublin makes it a compelling alternative. Top Irish universities including Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin are accepting applications now for January 2027.

Canada's January 2027 intake is viable but requires early action given the 80% study permit rejection rate for Indian students in 2025. Applications submitted in June–July 2026 give the most processing buffer before the semester start.

US Spring 2027 offers fewer programme options than Fall — most universities limit Spring intake to graduate programmes — but is a genuine option for students who missed Fall 2026 deadlines and are targeting specific MS programmes in the US.

Spring 2027 Action Checklist by Country

The deadlines vary by destination, but the preparation steps are largely the same. Here is what Indian students targeting a January or February 2027 start should be doing right now:

  • Germany (urgent — act this week): Apply for APS certificate at aps-india.de. Open blocked account (€11,904). Shortlist programmes and check individual university deadlines — Freie Universität Berlin closes May 31. RWTH Aachen and Stuttgart portals just opened.
  • Australia (open now): Begin applications at University of Melbourne, UNSW, and other target universities. PG timely deadline at UoM is August 31, 2026. Factor in the AUD 4,600 graduate visa fee in your total cost calculation.
  • Ireland (open now): Shortlist programmes at TU Dublin, UCD, University of Galway, and University of Limerick. Most deadlines fall August–October 2026. Prepare IELTS scores and transcripts now.
  • UK (prepare now, apply June 2026): Portals open approximately June 2026. Use May to prepare IELTS, personal statement, and references. Understand the Graduate Route change — January 2027 starters will receive 18 months, not 2 years.
  • Canada (open now): Apply early given the 80% rejection rate. Target applications by July–August 2026 for maximum processing time. Confirm PGWP eligibility for your specific programme before applying.
  • USA (open now): Check programme-specific Spring 2027 availability. Most MS programmes accept Spring applicants. F-1 visa processing times remain unpredictable — apply for the visa as soon as you receive your I-20.

Spring intakes have historically been treated as backup options — fewer programmes, smaller cohorts, less scholarship availability. That framing is less accurate in 2026 than it has ever been. With Fall 2026 US F-1 visa rejections running at 61% and Canada's study permit rejection rate at 80% for Indian students, a significant number of students who applied for Fall 2026 are now looking at January 2027 as their primary start date — not a fallback.

Germany's Winter intake, in particular, is a primary intake — not a secondary one. The majority of German university programmes open in October, making Winter 2026/27 the main entry point for Indian students targeting Germany. Australia's February intake is similarly the country's primary semester. For these two destinations, Spring 2027 is not a backup. It is the main event.

The students who act in May 2026 — applying for APS, opening blocked accounts, submitting Australian applications — will have the widest range of options and the most processing buffer. Those who wait until August will find Germany closed, Australian seats reduced, and Irish deadlines approaching. The window is open. It will not stay that way.
