Indian students who missed early application rounds for France and Italy can still secure a September 2026 seat — but the window is closing fast. France's Hors DAP portal for Master's programs at public universities closes between March 31 and April 15, 2026, while Italy's Universitaly pre-enrollment deadline for most programs runs through May 25, 2026.
Together, France and Italy enrolled over 14,500 Indian students in 2024 — France with 8,536 (up 14% year-on-year) and Italy with approximately 6,017 on study visas. As the US, UK, and Canada continue to tighten access, both countries have emerged as high-value alternatives — and right now, their doors are still open.

What Closed — and What's Still Open?
The confusion for many Indian students stems from France's two-track system.
- The DAP deadline — which covers first-year undergraduate (L1) entry at public universities — closed on January 17, 2026.
- Many students assume this means France is shut for the year. It isn't.
The Hors DAP route, which covers Master's (M1 and M2) and upper-undergraduate (L2, L3) programs at public French universities, is a separate track with a later deadline.
Applications go through the Etudes en France portal and close between March 31 and April 15, 2026, depending on the university. This is the primary route for the majority of Indian applicants — most of whom are targeting postgraduate programs.
For Italy, the picture is similarly misunderstood. Italy has no single centralised deadline. Applications are submitted through the Universitaly portal, and for non-restricted programs (open-access courses), the pre-enrollment deadline for the 2026/27 academic year is May 25, 2026 — confirmed by the University of Pavia and consistent with the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) guidelines.
France: Programs and Deadlines Still Open Right Now
| Application Track | Deadline | Status | Programs Covered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hors DAP (Etudes en France) | March 31–April 15, 2026 | OPEN — URGENT | M1, M2, L2, L3 at public universities |
| Connect Programs (Grandes Écoles) | April–June 2026 | OPEN | Business schools, engineering schools |
| Direct University Applications | April–July 2026 | OPEN | Private universities, rolling admissions |

Through the Hors DAP procedure, students can apply to up to 7 programs across different French public universities in a single application. Universities still accepting applications include Paris-Saclay, Université de Strasbourg, Université de Toulouse III, Université Grenoble Alpes, and Université de Bordeaux — all offering English-taught Master's programs at a tuition fee of just €243 per year (approximately ₹26,264 at the current ECB rate of €1 = ₹108.09 as of March 23, 2026).
For students targeting business schools, Connect programs at SKEMA, Audencia, NEOMA, and Toulouse Business School remain open through May–June 2026, with tuition ranging from €12,000–€20,000 per year (approximately ₹13–21.6 lakh). Many offer merit scholarships of 20–50% for strong Indian applicants.
One mandatory step that cannot be skipped: the Campus France interview at an Alliance Française centre in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, or Chandigarh). Interview slots currently take 1–4 weeks to secure. Students applying via Hors DAP must book this immediately — it is required before any visa application can proceed.
Italy: Who Can Still Apply and How
Italy's application system is decentralised — each university sets its own deadlines within the government framework. For Indian students, the key step is the Universitaly pre-enrollment application, which is mandatory for all non-EU students seeking a study visa.
For the 2026/27 academic year:
- Non-restricted programs (open-access courses): Pre-enrollment deadline May 25, 2026
- Restricted-access programs (competitive/quota-based): Pre-enrollment deadline August 31, 2026

Indian students in Italy numbered approximately 6,017 in 2024, up from 5,196 in 2023 — a 16% increase — with projections of 22.2% growth through 2025. The country's appeal is straightforward: public university tuition ranges from €500–€4,000 per year (approximately ₹54,000–₹4.3 lakh), and Italy offers a post-study work permit of up to one year after graduation.
Popular programs for Indian students include engineering, architecture, design, economics, and management. Universities with strong English-taught offerings include Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino, University of Bologna, University of Padua, and Bocconi University (private, with its own earlier deadlines).
Important: Bocconi's final application round for September 2026 typically closes in April. Students targeting Bocconi specifically should check the university portal immediately.
Who Should Apply Now — and Who Shouldn't Wait
Apply now if you are:
- A postgraduate (Master's) applicant targeting France — the Hors DAP window closes in days
- An undergraduate or postgraduate applicant targeting Italy — Universitaly opens in spring with May deadlines
- A student who missed US, UK, or Canada deadlines and needs a September 2026 start
- A STEM, management, or design student — both countries have strong English-taught programs in these fields
Be aware of the risks if applying late:
- Visa timeline compression: The Campus France interview, pre-consular opinion, VFS appointment, and visa processing together take a minimum of 6–10 weeks. A late April admission from France leaves very little margin before September.
- Scholarship slots are gone: Most major scholarships — Charpak, Eiffel Excellence, Italian Government Scholarships — had deadlines in January–February. Late applicants will largely be self-funded.
- Schengen appointment delays: As reported separately, VFS appointment slots for France and Italy are currently taking 45–60 days to secure. Factor this into your visa timeline from day one.
Fast-Track Strategy for Late Applicants
If you are starting your application in late March or April 2026, here is the sequence that gives you the best chance of a September start:
- France first, today: Submit your Hors DAP application on the Etudes en France portal before March 31. Apply to all 7 program slots. Simultaneously book your Campus France interview.
- Italy in parallel: Register on Universitaly and begin your pre-enrollment application. Identify 3–5 target universities and check their individual deadlines — some are earlier than the May 25 government deadline.
- Documents in order now: Both countries require academic transcripts, a Statement of Purpose, letters of recommendation, proof of funds, and language scores (IELTS 6.0–6.5 for English-taught programs). Any missing document delays everything.
- Book your VFS appointment immediately: Do not wait for an admission letter to check slot availability. France and Italy VFS slots are filling fast. Book a provisional slot and update documents once the offer arrives.
- Use Connect programs as backup: If Hors DAP results are delayed or unfavourable, France's business school Connect programs (SKEMA, Audencia, NEOMA) accept applications through June and can still deliver a September start.
Both countries have been actively courting Indian students as the Big Four tighten access. France has set a formal target of 30,000 Indian students by 2030 and offers a 2-year post-study work visa (APS) after a Master's degree — one of the most generous in Europe. Italy's Indian student numbers have grown over 2,300% in a decade, from roughly 250 a decade ago to over 12,000 today, according to the Italian Ambassador to India.
At current exchange rates (€1 = ₹108.09), a full Master's degree at a French public university costs under ₹55,000 in total tuition — less than one semester's fee at many private Indian universities. Italy's public universities are similarly priced. For Indian students priced out of the US or UK, both countries represent a genuine, high-quality alternative — if the application window is used before it closes.
