Universities in Taiwan offer various forms of financial aid to help international students get their education at efficient prices. Government scholarships are purposeful in promoting education in Taiwan among students from foreign countries. College fees are made affordable by the individual scholarships and fellowships provided by the universities. Taiwan scholarships have different eligibility criteria and awards offered but most provide tuition fee waivers. Some cover housing and dormitory expenses and provide money for airfares. Miscellaneous fees and monthly expenses in varying amounts are also provided to students in their UG/ PG/ PhD in some cases.

There are scholarships providing for a student's travel and housing allowance and extra expenses. The application period for Taiwan scholarships usually begins in February and lasts through March 31 of each year.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria differ for all scholarships and fellowships in Taiwan but all students being offered the financial aid needed to excel academically and maintain a good character. It is necessary to meet the criteria for language proficiency :-

  • TOEFL ITP- 500 and above
  • TOEFL iBT - 61 and above
  • TOEIC- 650 and above
  • FLPT - English - 65

There are instances wherein a ROC national or overseas Chinese student is not eligible for scholarships. Also, students cannot apply for another scholarship if they are receiving any other financial aid from the Taiwan Government agency or university in Taiwan. Students will not be eligible if they hold a scholarship for a total of five years or have had their scholarship revoked. It is necessary to apply for a course degree at a university in Taiwan to avail of any scholarships.

  • letters of recommendation signed and sealed in envelopes from higher authorities

  • Photocopy of diploma/ grade transcript authenticated by an overseas Representative Office/ Embassy of Taiwan, R.O.C.

Application Process

Students can apply for the scholarships in Taiwan only after they have completed their online admission form for the university they want to attend. It is important to keep check of all the documents required at the time of application so be sure to go through the official list of essentials needed. The students will be selected on the basis of their GPA and academic as well as research skills. The Vice President for global affairs, representatives of each college, Tsing Hua College and the Office of Academic Affairs are all gathered to discuss the awardees.


Selection Process

The selection process for scholarships at the universities in Taiwan are primarily based on their foreign citizen status and their merit records. It is very important for a student wishing to apply for an undergraduate scholarship in Taiwan to have a GPA of 3.0 or above and a 3.5 or above for graduate scholarships. Students are required to produce a language proficiency certificate as well for courses taking place in Chinese (TOFCL) and/or in English (TOEFL). It is also very important to prepare for interviews as the second part of the selection process consists of an in-person or online interview conducted by the university.

Taiwan Scholarship provides a lot of chances to its students who are in need of financial aid. As it takes community and connectedness at its heart, students from abroad are often welcome here. The scholarships are funded by the Government or the universities themselves. The Ministry of Education in Taiwan also provides financial support to its foreign students.
