Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships

The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships 2025 are the fully-funded undergraduate scholarships for international students. It is a great chance for international students to study at top Japanese universities at no cost. The MEXT undergraduate scholarships are available for all undergraduate students regardless of discipline.

  • Duration of MEXT scholarships is 5 years including a 1 year preparatory course after bachelor’s degree. Those pursuing bachelor’s degree in medicine, dentistry, or pharmacy will receive the scholarship up to 7 years.
  • Eligible students will get a stipend of 117,000 Yen (~ Rs.68,800) per month. 
  • The scholarship period will last for five years from April 2026 to March 2031, including one-year preparatory education in the Japanese language and other subjects due to be provided upon arrival in Japan.
  • Up to 12 (Approximately 12 applicants who successfully pass the first screening will proceed to the world-wide final screening by MEXT.)

Eligibility Criteria

To avail the MEXT undergraduate scholarship, international students must fulfill the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must be an international student from a country having diplomatic relations with Japan.
  • The Applicant must be 17 years to 25 years old.
  • Applicants losing academic year due to justifiable reasons after crossing the age limit are eligible for scholarships.
  • Successful completion of 12 years of high school education.
  • Candidates must be proficient with Japanese language.
  • English language proficiency (for English courses).

Application Process

The MEXT scholarship application opens every year in the month of April.   • Review your application before submitting it.
  • Upload the required documents.
  • Attempt the written test conducted by the Japanese Embassy.
  • Attend the interview (if invited)

The scholarship period will last for five years from April 2026 to March 2031.


Selection Process

The selection process for MEXT scholarship includes a written test for all the applicants and an interview for shortlisted applicants. The final decision will be made on the basis of the students overall academic profile, written assessment and interview performance.
