The Whitworth Trust Fund awards scholarships to students in the field of engineering, who live in the UK. The Whitworth Scholarships are given at the levels of Undergraduate & Masters and Postgraduate Research.

Scholars must be citizens of the UK, EU, or Commonwealth, and must have resided in the UK for at least three years.
Scholars must be admitted to a college-level course in engineering.
Scholars may annually receive up to 9,000 GBP and senior scholars may receive up to 15,000 GBP.

Students are selected based on their talent, and the awardees will become members of and get to participate in activities of the Whitworth Society, which is a group of professional engineers in the UK.

Eligibility Criteria

This scholarship opportunity is meant for students enrolling into an undergraduate or postgraduate degree-level engineering course, in any branch of study.

Applicants must be a British, European Union, or Commonwealth citizen. India is one of the 54 Commonwealth countries.
For undergraduate study and MSc study (including MEng),
- applicants must be entering into a College of Further Education/Higher Education or University.
- applicants must have at least 2 years’ experience pursuing a vocational route in engineering, after completing full-time school-level education and before beginning the degree-level course.
- applicants must have spent at least 3 years as a resident in the UK before starting the course.
For postgraduate research,
- applicants must have just completed a graduate degree in engineering and have been admitted to, or already started a postgraduate research programme.
- applicants must have spent at least 3 years as a resident in the UK before doing a course at a College of Further Education/Higher Education or University.
- applicants must have at least 2 years’ experience pursuing a vocational route in engineering, after completing full-time school-level education and before beginning the degree-level course.
Final year students cannot apply, as the scholarship will be awarded in the next academic year after selection.

A candidate can only receive a maximum of one scholarship at the undergraduate level and at the postgraduate level.

Application Process

Application forms are to be downloaded from the official Whitworth Scholarships website. There are separate forms for the Scholarship and the Senior Scholarship, and you must confirm eligibility on the website before downloading the form. You will be required to give details of:

Educational history
Employment history
Finance
Referees

The application form has to be filled out and submitted along with documents of proof to Karen Frost, ASK House, IMechE Prizes and Awards, Northgate Avenue, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP32 6BB, or to awards@whitworthscholarships.org.uk.

The deadline for submission is July 31 every year. Additionally, you must also get your referees to submit a copy of your application form and a confidential report document before July 10.

All applications will receive an acknowledgement with a unique reference number within seven working days.

Selection Process

After going through all the applications, the committee calls shortlisted candidates for an interview, which will usually happen in August.

If a candidate is called for an interview and cannot attend, there will be no postponing of dates.
The Institution may provide a reimbursement of upto 100 GBP for travelling expenses.
Candidates are selected for the scholarship on the basis of their

- practical skills
- academic merit
- potential for a successful career

The candidates are assessed by the Institution and all decisions are made at their discretion.

Grant Details

Founded by Sir Joseph Whitworth in 1868, the Whitworth Scholarships are under the Trust of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Talented engineering students are selected and awarded scholarships in many universities in the UK.

Undergraduate/Masters students, according to the various courses they are pursuing, will be awarded like so:
- Full-time study - 9,000 GBP per year for up to 4 years (excluding industrial placements)
- Sandwich - the award will be paid on a pro rata basis
- Part-time study - the award will be paid on a reduced basis normally 3,000 GBP per year
- MSc (1 year full-time) 9,000 GBP
- MSc (2 year part-time) normally 3,000 GBP per year
Postgraduate Research students will receive:
- Full-time research - 15,000 GBP per year for up to 3 years
- Part-time research - 4,500 GBP per year

No awardee can receive more than a total of 36,000 GBP. However, recipients are free to hold any awards other than a Whitworth Award alongside The Whitworth Scholarship Award.
