Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships are awarded to Indian PhD scholars at an institute in the country. The grant is for Ph.D. students planning to conduct research essential to their thesis/dissertations. These fellowships last between 6 and 9 months. As an applicant, you will be affiliated with one U.S. host institution.
As an applicant, you will be affiliated with one U.S. host institution. USIEF recommends all applicants to identify institutes of their choice to be affiliated and to correspond with the host institutions in advance. If you secure a letter of invitation from a US institute, you should include it as a part of the online application. Selected scholars will have opportunities to audit non-degree programs, conduct research, and gain practical work experience.

Note: The fellowship is only for pre-doctoral level research. Applicants who have completed their Ph.D. are not eligible for Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships.

Remember, the fellowship application form must be completed in one session only, and one session expires if your page is inactive for 60 minutes.
A letter of invitation from a U.S. institution must also be included as a part of an online application for Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships. Extensions and transfer of visa sponsorship will not be permitted.
Note: Plagiarism and late submission of applications will not be entertained.
To make applicants comfortable with the whole selection process, USIEF offices organize Fulbright mentoring workshops that guide applicants on the elements of a strong application. One can contact the USIEF office in one's region for information on the mentoring workshops. Selection panels will often use the following criteria to review applications:
The review process takes two to three months after the application deadline. For the interview round, shortlisted applicants must appear for an in-person interview in New Delhi. Recipients of Fullbright Scholarships will be informed through email.
Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships are offered to students pursuing pre-doctoral level research at any recognized institute in India. Students who want to study in the USA and pursue a research project at host institutions in the USA can apply for this scholarship.
