Utrecht University admissions for Indian students run through one international gateway, with bachelor entry expecting a Class XII pre-university record at VWO-equivalent grades plus IELTS 6.0 to 7.0, and master entry asking for a research university bachelor’s plus IELTS 6.5 or higher.

  • Primary September 2027 intake deadline: 1 April 2027 for Indian non-EU passport holders, with the file complete by 23:59 CET.
  • Base tuition for non-EU masters: €21,342 to €25,306 per year (around INR 23.02 Lakhs to INR 27.29 Lakhs), plus a one-time application fee of €100 (around INR 10,785).
  • UG entry: Class XII at VWO-equivalent grades and IELTS 6.0; PG entry: research-university Bachelor’s in a relevant field plus IELTS 6.5.
  • Acceptance rate: Utrecht University does not publish an official figure; third-party estimates put admissions near 22 percent.

Indian applicants most often target Computing Science, Business Informatics, Artificial Intelligence, and the Liberal Arts and Sciences track at University College Utrecht, with the Utrecht University overview noting small-group teaching and strong career outcomes.

Status: Open. Utrecht University’s primary September 2027 intake closes 1 April 2027 for Indian non-EU passport holders. The nearest still-open window is the February 2027 intake, with a 1 September 2026 deadline. The application fee is €100 (around INR 10,785), paid once per cycle via OSIRIS.

Utrecht University Application Deadlines for Indian Students

Utrecht University runs a primary September intake and a smaller February intake. Indian applicants who need an MVV entry visa must file the complete application by 1 April for September or 1 September for February, per the official Utrecht University master application timeline. Each programme has its own internal deadline within these windows, so always confirm on the course admission page.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use EUR 1 = INR 107.85 (June 2026). Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

Utrecht University’s primary intake for Indian students is September: this is where most masters and bachelors open seats. The February intake is restricted to a smaller subset of programmes.

Planning note: The 1 April and 1 September dates are hard cut-offs because IND needs lead time to process the MVV entry visa. Files that arrive after these dates are not considered, regardless of strength.

Utrecht University Eligibility for Indian Students

Utrecht University uses a three-tier EMI (English Medium of Instruction) framework: EMI-ready, EMI-experienced, and EMI-advanced. Each programme picks one tier and lists it on its admission page, per the Utrecht University English language requirements page. Academic eligibility is checked against Nuffic Dutch-equivalency standards.

  • UG general entry: Class XII at VWO-equivalent grades (around 75 to 85 percent).
  • UG Mathematics tracks: Class XII Mathematics studied through final year (A-level or B-level equivalent).
  • PG general entry: Bachelor’s from a research university in a relevant field.
  • PG quantitative tracks: Bachelor’s must cover prerequisite subjects such as microeconomics, statistics, or programming and algorithms.

Indian three-year BSc, BA, and BCom degrees are usually accepted as research-university bachelors, but each programme can ask for prerequisite coursework on top.

Does Utrecht University waive IELTS for Indian students?

Utrecht University accepts IB Diploma, European Baccalaureate, and French Baccalauréat holders as English-proficiency exempt if the English component meets the listed threshold. Indian CBSE, ICSE, and State Board applicants are not exempt and must submit a valid IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, or Cambridge score. India is not on Utrecht’s English-degree exemption country list, so an English-medium Indian bachelor’s alone does not waive the test.

EMI Level IELTS Academic TOEFL iBT Cambridge C1 / C2
EMI-ready 6.0 overall (5.5 Speaking, 5.5 Writing) 83 overall 169 overall
EMI-experienced 6.5 overall (6.0 each section) 93 overall 176 overall
EMI-advanced 7.0 overall (6.5 each section) 100 overall 185 overall

Test reports must be less than two years old at submission. IELTS Online and IELTS One Skill Retake are not accepted. Indian applicants chasing funding for Indian students like the Holland Scholarship should clear EMI-experienced minimums first since selection committees rank academic and English files together.

Utrecht University Masters Programmes and Tuition

Insider note: Selective masters such as Computing Science and Sustainable Development have admission committees that compare the Bachelor’s curriculum against Dutch research bachelors module-by-module. Indian applicants should attach a course-content summary to head off prerequisite gaps.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Utrecht University masters page for your chosen program before applying.

Utrecht University Bachelor Programmes for Indian Students

Most Utrecht University bachelors are taught in Dutch, but Indian applicants have around 12 English-taught options, with University College Utrecht (UCU) acting as the flagship Liberal Arts route. Base tuition for non-EU bachelors is set per faculty by the institutional fee schedule, per the Utrecht University bachelor application page. UCU runs its own admissions cycle with two rounds.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
Liberal Arts and Sciences (University College Utrecht) 3 years Class XII at VWO-equivalent grades (around 75 to 85 percent), strong English, interdisciplinary record IELTS 7.0
Economics and Business Economics 3 years Class XII with Mathematics studied through final year (A-level or B-level equivalent) IELTS 6.0
Global Sustainability Science 3 years Class XII with Mathematics plus two science subjects from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, or Geography IELTS 6.0
Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) 3 years Selective intake of 75 seats; Class XII with Mathematics and English at advanced grade IELTS 7.0

PPE has a much earlier cut-off of 14 January 2027 for the September 2027 cycle since it is a numerus fixus (capped-seat) programme with a separate selection round.

Utrecht University PhD Programmes for Indian Candidates

Utrecht University follows the Dutch employee-PhD model: PhD candidates are hired as university employees on four-year contracts, not enrolled as fee-paying students. There is no annual application window. Indian candidates apply to advertised vacancies as they open, per the Utrecht University PhD vacancies page.

Utrecht University PhD Funding and Salary

Salaried PhD candidates earn €3,050 to €3,880 gross per month (around INR 3.29 Lakhs to INR 4.18 Lakhs) for the 2025-2026 academic year, with annual structural increments, an 8 percent holiday allowance, and an 8.3 percent end-of-year bonus. The position also includes ABP pension contributions and parental leave under the Dutch universities’ Collective Labour Agreement.

Utrecht University PhD Vacancies and Application

Each vacancy lists its own supervisor, faculty, project scope, and closing date. Indian candidates send a CV, motivation letter, transcripts, and a research statement tied to the listed project. Shortlisted applicants are usually interviewed online before a formal contract offer.

Reality check: Self-funded or scholarship-only PhDs are rare at Utrecht University. Pre-aligning with a supervisor and matching an open vacancy is the realistic route for most Indian candidates.

Utrecht University Application Process for Indian Students

Utrecht University uses two linked systems: Studielink (the national enrolment platform) and OSIRIS Online Application (the document and fee portal). All deadlines close at 23:59 CET, per the Utrecht University master application procedure page. Indian applicants without a Dutch DigiD create a Studielink account directly.

  1. Pick your programme on the Utrecht University course catalogue and confirm the EMI level and prerequisite subjects on its admission page.
  2. Create a Studielink account using the "Create Studielink-account without DigiD" option for non-Netherlands residents.
  3. Submit your enrolment request in Studielink for the chosen programme and intake (September 2027 or February 2027).
  4. Receive OSIRIS login by email within a few working days and start uploading documents in PDF format (max 2 MB per file).
  5. Pay the application fee of €100 (around INR 10,785) on the OSIRIS application portal via VISA, MasterCard, or American Express.
  6. Submit the complete file with all PDFs uploaded and the fee paid before the deadline; certified digital documents are processed within 5 to 10 working days.
  7. Receive the admission decision within 20 working days and respond on the offer terms before Utrecht University files your MVV with IND.

A single €100 fee covers any number of Utrecht University applications and stays valid for three years.

Utrecht University Admission Decisions Timeline

Utrecht University aims to issue admission decisions within 20 working days of receiving a complete application file. The decision arrives by email and, if positive, lands in OSIRIS as a formal offer letter with any conditions clearly listed.

  • Decision turnaround: 20 working days from a complete OSIRIS file.
  • Conditional offers: common when final transcripts or a degree certificate are pending.
  • Offer acceptance: respond inside OSIRIS, then complete the visa and housing steps.
  • Deferral policy: not automatic; a fresh application is usually required for the next cycle.
  • UCU bachelor offers: early-round decisions by 15 March, regular-round decisions by 1 May.

Once you accept, Utrecht University starts the MVV entry visa and residence permit application on your behalf through IND, which adds another two to four weeks before you can travel.

Documents Required for Utrecht University Admissions

Utrecht University accepts scans and certified digital copies uploaded as PDFs on OSIRIS, capped at 2 MB per file. Sworn translations are required for any document not in English, Dutch, French, German, or Spanish. Final-year applicants can submit pre-final marksheets with a written statement of expected completion.

  • Valid passport scan (biographical page only).
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate and transcripts (certified copies), or pre-final marksheets for current students.
  • Class XII certificate and marksheet (UG applicants).
  • English proficiency report (IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, or Cambridge C1 / C2), under two years old.
  • Motivation letter in PDF, programme-specific structure.
  • Curriculum vitae in PDF, single document.
  • Sworn translations of any document not in the five accepted languages.
  • Programme add-ons such as research proposal, writing sample, or portfolio when the course lists them.

Receipt of the application fee is treated as part of the file; OSIRIS will not let you submit until the €100 is paid.

Utrecht University Acceptance Rate

Utrecht University does not publish an official institution-wide acceptance rate. Third-party estimates put overall admissions at around 22 percent, based on competitive-intake patterns across English-taught masters where international applicants outnumber seats. Programme-level rates vary widely.

Utrecht University Acceptance Rate by Programme Type

English-taught masters like Artificial Intelligence, Computing Science, Business Informatics, and Sustainable Development run well below the institutional estimate because Indian applicants compete with EU, UK, and US bachelors for a fixed cohort size. Numerus fixus bachelors such as PPE cap at 75 seats and admit a single-digit share of applicants. Less-selective humanities and social-science masters sit closer to the 22 percent mark. The Utrecht University ranking band in QS top 110 globally drives the volume of international files.

Insider note: The committee places real weight on the motivation letter and prerequisite-course match. A strong CGPA with a thin justification is routinely beaten by a moderate CGPA with a tight letter that maps Indian coursework to the Dutch curriculum.

Netherlands Student Visa for Utrecht University

Indian students need both an MVV (Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf) entry visa and a residence permit (verblijfsvergunning) to study at Utrecht University for more than 90 days. Utrecht University files both together with IND on the student’s behalf after offer acceptance, which is faster than self-filing through the Dutch embassy.

The combined MVV and residence permit fee is €286 (around INR 30,845) when the university files. Indian students must show around €11,000 (around INR 11.86 Lakhs) in a personal account as financial proof, plus the full first-year tuition. IND processes the combined application within 2 to 4 weeks of a complete file. After arrival in Utrecht, students collect biometrics and pick up the residence permit card at the IND desk on campus.

2026 update: The Netherlands continues to route Indian student visas through the university for Utrecht University admits, so the MVV and residence permit arrive as one combined product. Plan to start the visa step within a week of accepting the offer.

Tips for Utrecht University Admissions

The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Utrecht University and what the OSIRIS process actually demands at each step.

  • File at least 6 weeks before 1 April since OSIRIS document checks take up to 10 working days near deadlines.
  • Pay the €100 fee early so OSIRIS unlocks document upload right after Studielink syncs.
  • Book IELTS 8 weeks before the deadline since report turnaround is around 13 days.
  • Send sworn translations with the certified original for any non-English transcript.
  • Park €11,000 in a bank account 3 months before the visa step to satisfy IND’s financial-proof trail.
  • Confirm your programme’s EMI level before sitting IELTS since EMI-advanced needs 7.0 overall.
  • Hit the 1 February scholarship deadline if you want Holland Scholarship review on the same file.

Utrecht University Admissions Checklist

The following steps cover what Indian applicants typically complete in the run-up to a Utrecht University deadline, sequenced by lead time rather than restated as paperwork.

  • 10 weeks out: Book IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT and request transcripts.
  • 8 weeks out: Order certified copies of Bachelor’s degree and Class XII certificates.
  • 6 weeks out: Draft motivation letter mapping Indian coursework to the programme’s prerequisites.

Overview

I didn't prepare in any coaching institute for my admission here. I was looking into all groups in my research field when I was JRF at IIT Bombay. I found an open position in my research interest group here. Then I applied the application to my professor. I got selected after having an interview. I would recommend having GRE & TOFEL scorecard if someone is interested in doing PhD in abroad.

Scholarship

As I mentioned earlier, the stipend or salary is taken care of by the university. So I didn't apply for any scholarship. But if anyone has any scholarship then they can use it during their PhD. That's up to them. There are no such criteria for getting a scholarship. After selecting into PhD, you can get a stipend from the university & professor.

Overview

For my particular course and interests, I knew I wanted to go to Europe as the best courses in sustainable energy are offered here. However, depending on the country's energy policies, the courses offered are highly tailored to teach students what their country requires. The Netherlands is the only country with a well-balanced approach toward transitioning to a more sustainable future. Thus, the course offered was in sync with my interests. Not to mention, the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at UU publishes high quality research with one of the highest number of citations. All in all, for my particular course (Energy Science) I couldn't have found a better university except maybe TU Delft.

Scholarship

I have not received a scholarship. Scholarships are highly selective and you are required to be an overachiever from your previous education in order to be qualified for the few available opportunities. For ex, a minimum aggregate grade of 8/10 is required.
