The Bachelor of Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) at the University of Waterloo is Canada’s most immersive four-year accounting programme, built on the largest co-operative education infrastructure in the nation. With 4 mandatory paid internships spanning 20 months and direct pathways to CPA and CFA certifications, AFM graduates emerge with professional credentials and real-world experience before setting foot in a permanent job.
- Ranked #119 globally in QS World University Rankings 2026 and recognised as a leader in accounting education in Canada.
- The School of Accounting and Finance offers a highly regarded integrated pathway from undergraduate to graduate studies.
- The AFM program is closely aligned with CPA Canada requirements, helping students complete many CPA prerequisites during their degree.
- Students benefit from strong co-op opportunities with major employers such as EY, Deloitte, RBC, Google, Microsoft, and Shopify.
For Indian students, the annual investment in tuition is CAD 58,000 (₹39.08 Lakhs), which is offset by some merit scholarships and co-op earnings that can return 40–60% of costs over four years. Moreover, the study permit and co-op framework provides a legal pathway to work in Canada while studying, and a post-graduation work permit of up to 3 years creates a realistic bridge to skilled-worker immigration and permanent residency under Canada’s Express Entry system.

Beyond entrance scholarships, Indian students are eligible for graduate research scholarships if they pursue a Master’s degree post-undergraduate. Admission Requirements and Eligibility for Indian Students
University of Waterloo admits students to the AFM programme based on high school grades and standardised test scores, with no SAFAA interview or supplemental trait assessment required as of the 2026 intake. For Indian students, the key academic requirement is a strong Grade 12 equivalent GPA (or equivalent marks on the Indian 10+2 Board exam or CBSE/ICSE). Waterloo typically expects Grade 12 English and Mathematics at the 90% level or above for AFM and other competitive programmes.
- IELTS Academic: Overall 6.5+, with 6.5 in Writing and Speaking, and 6.0 in Reading and Listening.
- TOEFL iBT: Overall 90+, with minimum scores of 25 in Writing and Speaking, and 20 in Reading and Listening.
- Duolingo English Test (DET): Overall 120+, with at least 110 in Literacy and Production.
No separate entrance examination beyond high school grades is required; Waterloo does not mandate SAT, ACT, or GMAT for undergraduate admission. While the AFM program does not require an interview anymore, Waterloo strongly recommends (and for some faculties, mandates) completing the online Admission Information Form (AIF) through your student portal. This form acts as your extracurricular resume where you log your achievements, sports, and business case competitions.
| Requirement | Specification | Indian Student Note |

| English Proficiency Test | IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL 90+ iBT | |
| Prerequisite Subjects | Mathematics (calculus level) | Class XII Mathematics |
| Supplemental Application | Admission Information Form (AIF) | No SAFAA, no interview, no essay required |

Graduate Outcomes and Career Placement
The AFM programme boasts a placement rate of 96% within six months of graduation, according to the School of Accounting and Finance. This exceptional outcome is attributable to three factors:
(1) mandatory four co-op terms during the degree, meaning students graduate with 20 months of paid work experience already listed on their CV;
(2) direct CPA and CFA accreditation alignment, allowing graduates to fast-track professional designations; and
(3) the extensive employer network within Waterloo’s co-op ecosystem, which includes the Big Four accounting firms (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC), all of whom hire co-op students into permanent roles post-graduation.
- Secure a co-op placement in Year 2 or 3 with leading employers such as Big Four firms, RBC, TD, or Shopify.
- Many students convert co-op placements into full-time job offers before graduation.
- After graduating, students can work in Canada through a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) of up to 3 years.
- Graduates may either pursue Canadian permanent residency through Express Entry or return to India with valuable Canadian work experience and globally recognised accounting credentials.
Graduates of AFM can choose the accelerated route to the CPA designation via Waterloo’s consecutive 8-month Master of Accounting (MAcc) program. The true timeline maps out as follows: Graduate with an AFM Bachelor’s degree (April) → Complete the MAcc Program (May to December) → Write the CPA Common Final Examination (CFE) immediately upon graduation. This eliminates the need to complete the standard 2-year CPA Professional Education Program external modules.

My secondary choices were business and finance programs at universities such as York, Ryerson but Waterloo's AFM outweighs all of them on the basis of practicality, reputation, reach and job opportunities. It's simply the best business related program after Toronto but it's also one of the hardest to be accepted into. Why would someone choose second tier B-programs from Ryerson when they have Waterloo offering them a spot in one of the most looked upon business programs in the country,
