What Students Say
Likes
- It has a good infrastructure. Has a lot of class rooms. Not strict in class rooms. Has a student concern department. Has a big food court.
- Also this college has a separate department for students, those who are suffering from mental illness like stress, depression etc, they would give them free counselling and make the students better.
- They also conduct different programs and festivals during the college hours. Those include party in the weekends, throw the ball on principle and Halloween.
Dislikes
- There's some dislikes about this college. The capacity of the college is very low compared to the student intake.
- The intake was high in 2022 but the college couldn't handle the population. And the bus are frequently cancelled during my time. So, I have to book a ride to reach the class. And most important thing was the housing.
- During post covid, housing and part time job was a nightmare for the new students. Even though college helped some students to get housing but most of the students were struggling to get their part time job in Peterborough. Due to this, some of my classmates took a house in GTA area and came from there to college everyday.
Required Exams for Admission
Course Curriculum
- The course curriculum would be mixed of lab and practical. But 70% will be depend on the Lab. You should score 50% in both theory and lab portions. If we got a activity for lab 1, that means it should be completed by you. If you copied from some other person, that means you and the other student will receive a 0 grade and will lead to first warming for plagiarism.
- For me weekly 3 days a lab and also includes theory. Rest 4 days, you can work. In my class there were 50 students and all of them from India.
Admission Experience
- I just applied to Fleming and got admission. But, my agent told me to apply for Lambton college but rejected me because they needed a high score in IELTS around 7 in all bands but I scored 6.5. But in Lambton, i applied for a one year course but in Fleming it was 2 yr. Even though the cost will be lesser, Fleming might give me 3 year work permit at the end of my study permit.
- I chose this college because it was located away from GTA and cost of living will be low and there is no admission fee and it is easy to find a part time job. Also got a rental room near fleming before landing to canada and paid a down payment. In one month after my landing, I got my first part time job in a restaurant and it was a NOC B job which I worked for 2 years. In meantime, the study permit holders who applied before December 2021, can work full time while studying for 1 year without any restriction.
- I applied in September 2021 for Jan intake 2022. It took around 2 months to get my acceptance letter and I just finished my UG in April 2021, So, I didn't get enough time to prepare for my IELTS. But i got 6.5 in all bands. After the acceptance letter, I applied for a student visa. I applied on October end. It took around 3 months. In mean time, I gave my medical and biometrics. And I got my visa in Jan 2022.
Faculty
- I'm not sure but I heard that for 20 students, there is a staff. Staff's are friendly but they are strict when it comes to the exam. They are very easy in lab hours. You can even complete the lab from you home, if you had a good laptop.
- The teaching method is not different. They just make it as a slide and give it to us and we should study by ourselves. Staff are not involved in finding part time jobs. I don't admire any of the staff because, during my college days, we only had a online class. So, I never met a teacher in person.
Campus Life
- In Fleming we have 3 locations. One is in Peterborough, Lindsay and the last one is in downtown Toronto. As it is mentioned in the question, we have all the facilities and also a pub and a bar inside the campus.
- The major sports event is football, hockey, and baseball. We have a student counsel named Fleming SOC, they are for the students. They will organize some events like fund raising for charity etc.
- The major campus festival is the Halloween party that takes place on October 31st. We don't have any extracurricular activities like India. But they have football, baseball and hockey clubs.
Part Time Jobs
- During my time, it was post covid. No one was hiring except walmart. But getting a job there needs a reference from the current employee. If you have a friend working there, you might get a job. But after a month, that is in March 2022, all the restaurants started dine-in open. So, they started to hire students. In On campus there are no part time jobs available. Only 2-3 spots left. If working outside campus, we should work for 20 hrs. But on campus, you can work full time for minimum wage. There is no such position for Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), or Departmental Assistant (DA) in Fleming college. So, I don't know the pay range. You can hardly get a job as a cashier in book store inside college but for a minimum wage and work for full time. It is difficult to get a on campus job.
- In Canada, they usually pay by hourly basis. Currently, it is easy to get a part time job in Peterborough and students can manage with their studies as well. Students should prepare a resume with their availability. They can drop the resume wherever they are hiring. But if they have a reference, they might easily get a part time job. Some students might work on night shifts and attends their class in morning or some may work 20 hrs on weekends alone.
Placement
- Most students with IT experience in India will a get job here. College will arrange a job fair at end of the final semester and I don't know how many got placed. In my program, students can earn a minimum salary of $35k to $45k as a fresher. I would take around 6 months to 1 year to find a field job but it might take longer now due to the recession going on.
- We can find jobs via LinkedIn, Indeed and also via referral. In my batch, lot of my friends continued their part time as full time and some worked as security and some worked as a tim hortons employee. Unlike in India, there's no such thing that major companies hire graduates. We have to find the job by ourselves. No company will hire a bunch of graduates from our college.
Accommodation
- As I mentioned, I got my room from India. That family was from my state, so it was easy for me to pass the early stages. I just posted on the FB market page and they contacted me.
- My monthly rent was $375 with all inclusive with high speed internet, laundry and kitchen, etc. There are scams going on. We should pay $50, just to see the room.
- There are some facebook groups, we just post a ad regarding the rental, landlords will DM us. If we pay, they will just disappear. It was just a KM from my house and 5 min by bus.
Exams
- In Fleming they accept IELTS minimum score of 6 band. They need certain documents like course completion certificate, degree certificate, resume, statement of purpose, letter of reference from my UG college professors.
- There is no interview process during my admission process but they select the candidates by their previous degree. I have my UG in IT and I took the course related to that.
Fees
- I don't have exact info regarding this. But my tuition fee is around $4.5k per semester and I paid $370 for the bus pass for students and alumni fee, wellness center fee and building fee, lab fee.
- Those add up to total of $3.5k. My final fee will look around $10k. My monthly expense will be around $200. Which include my groceries, phone bill, out side food.
Scholarship
- There is no scholarship in canada. No one told us anything about that. It's not like India to get a scholarship but if we work and file a tax on the upcoming year, we might get some returns and we can mange our expenses.
- If you file a Liberty tax, they might give you the maximum returns and charge you $70, if you are a student. But if they have a work permit than they might charge around $100.
