Campus Life
- Georgian College has 7 campuses across Ontario.
Barrie Campus (Main Campus)
Orillia Campus
Midland Campus
Muskoka Campus
Orangeville Campus
South Georgian Bay Campus
Alpine Ski Resort Campus - I study at the main campus which is the Barrie campus, this campus is equipped with lots of facilities such as a big library, sports facilities, gym, basketball court, and medical centre.
- Our college organises various events and fests throughout the year, the most loved event is Winter fest, it is organised to welcome the winter season and many activities are organised like ice skating, snow sculptures etc.
- The student union actively organises theme parties and cultural events. There are various sports clubs which students can join like basketball, soccer, volleyball etc.
- Overall, Georgian College provides a lot of extracurricular activities to keep the students
engaged and entertained.
Part Time Jobs
- I do not know much about the on campus jobs. There are various options available, such as TA, RA, DA, Library assistant, Campus ambassador, fitness center and cafeteria.
- The competition is very high for on-campus jobs due to limited vacancies, by applying early and having a good network can help in securing on-campus jobs.
- As an international student, I noticed that most Indian students prefer to find off-campus part- time jobs. They choose to work at Restaurants and food joints, retail and customer service fields. The main reason for choosing these opinions are flexible hours.
- The hourly wage for part-time jobs was around $15 (in 2021). The pay may vary depending on the nature of the job and the job’s location. The competition for part-time jobs is tough due to its high demand among international students.
- Keeping a good academic record and having prior work experience can spike up your chances.
- Online portals Linkedin and Indeed, walk-in directly to the stores with your resume, reference from peers or faculties are few options to get a part-time job.
Placement
- After graduating from Georgian College, I was assured of a bright career. The salaries after graduation differ according to the industry and job title; however, graduates from Georgian are usually paid decent amounts.
- Employment Search Techniques:-Students can employ several strategies in seeking employment after graduation:
- Campus Recruitment: Students work with the college's Co-op Education and Career Success team, who connect them with potential employers.
- The internship is done during the course for getting practical exposure and making professional connections.
- Networking: Attending industry events, workshops, and seminars to connect with professionals and learn about job opportunities.
- Online Job Portals: Utilizing job portals, including but not limited to Indeed, LinkedIn, and the college's own job portal to look for and apply to positions.
Accommodation
- I opted to stay off campus while studying at Georgian College, which was more
independent. - I used websites like Kijiji, Facebook Market Place to find off-campus accommodation. These apps help students find off-campus housing by listing out available properties and profiles of students looking for roommates, making it easier to find a place to stay.
- The rent amount is between $400-$700 per month. I got a fully furnished apartment that had all the required necessities, such as electricity, heating, water, internet access, a fully equipped fitness centre and laundry.
- Accommodation was a challenge to secure, due to the competitive rental market near the college. This often meant that when housing did become available, it was necessary to act quickly. Besides, understanding the rental agreements and local regulations required attention to detail to avoid misunderstandings and ensure full compliance.
- My honest advice is to start your house search as early as possible, preferably before arrival. Websites like Places4Students, and Kijiji can be helpful. It is advised to get in touch with other students through college forums or social media groups to help each other find a place to stay.
- Wherever possible, visiting the potential accommodations in person will give a better idea of the living conditions and the neighbourhood around.
- My accommodation was about a 5-minute walk from the college campus. Many international students, including those from India, prefer to stay in places like Allandale and Holly because of their proximity to the college and the easy availability of houses on rent. These areas offer shared accommodation and private rentals as well making it popular choice among students .Overall, it’s not very challenging to find off-campus housing near Georgian College, careful
planning and seeking out available resources can be very helpful.
