What Students Say
Likes
- I selected this University for its distinct research-focused MBA program, which sets it apart. With a reduced emphasis on work experience, it extends opportunities to a wider range of applicants. The advantage of lower competition compared to other public universities is appealing, creating an environment conducive to career growth. Moreover, the general MBA option aligns with my desire to gain holistic knowledge across business domains.
- Vancouver Island University (VIU) is amazing. The location is perfect if you like nature without extreme weather. The island's mild climate means you enjoy all seasons comfortably. The best part? Classes are small, like 20-25 students.
- You're not lost in a crowd; it's a close group where talking is encouraged. Professors know your name, care about your progress, and teach with passion. They're experts and make learning engaging. VIU feels like a friendly community where you learn, connect, and grow.
Dislikes
- At Vancouver Island University (VIU), a lack of diversity among students, with about 80% from one group, is noticeable. This limits exposure to different cultures and perspectives, which is important for a richer learning environment.
- Additionally, job opportunities are scarce on the island due to the absence of major companies. This makes finding meaningful employment after putting in educational effort frustrating. Despite VIU's positives, these challenges impact the overall experience and future prospects. Hoping for improvements in diversity and job opportunities.
Required Exams for Admission
My time at the university has been truly enriching. The campus's natural beauty, small class sizes, and dedicated professors have created a dynamic learning atmosphere. While there are challenges like limited job options and diversity, the personalized education, research opportunities, and sustainability focus have made this journey incredibly valuable.
Course Curriculum
From what I've observed, the Course Curriculum and Academics here are quite impressive. They start from scratch, which is great for newcomers to business studies. I appreciate that the curriculum stays up-to-date, addressing current problems and their solutions.
Faculty
Our esteemed faculty is a highlight, ensuring a personalized experience with a favorable faculty-to-student ratio. The faculty and staff are not only knowledgeable but also approachable, enhancing our learning journey. Professor Bonita's management teachings simplify complex concepts, while Bronwen's guidance in research cultivates critical thinking. Their impactful approach has left a memorable impression on our campus experience.
Campus Life
While I personally haven't been involved in clubs and extracurricular events, there's an impressive array of offerings like the MBA games and case competitions. These events provide a platform for active participation and engagement, and various clubs actively recruit members. The library here offers access to an extensive range of databases, research papers, and resources such as Statista and IBIS World. The strong WiFi connectivity ensures seamless access to information. Additionally, the availability of a free gym for students contributes to a well-rounded campus experience.
Placement
The program's post-study placement and research opportunities have a distinctive focus. While smaller companies and banks are the common visitors, the number of placements is limited. However, networking activities play a crucial role in connecting students to potential job openings. Although placement options might be fewer, the emphasis on networking and individual capabilities provides an alternative route to securing meaningful roles.
Accommodation
When it comes to accommodation abroad, there's a mix of choices available. While student residences are on the table, they tend to get snapped up pretty fast. This situation pushed me and many others to look into different options.I found that renting a room off-campus is a popular route. If you're aiming for your own space, expect to pay around 800 CAD, and that covers your utilities. But for those open to sharing a room with a roommate, the cost drops quite a bit, averaging about 650 CAD.
Exams
I achieved an overall score of 7.5 in IELTS, while the minimum criteria require a score of 7 overall, with no band less than 6.5. In addition to test scores and mark sheets, they require a CV detailing work experience with clear dates. A well-crafted Statement of Purpose (SOP) is essential, showcasing academic and career goals, program alignment, and contributions.
Fees
The total tuition fees for my program amount to approximately 53,689 CAD.
