Dislikes
- Bigger Class sizes - Some courses has 500-600 students in a classroom.
- Tuition : The tuition was a bit higher for international students.
- Job Market : the job market in Lexington was very limited.
Course Curriculum
- The level of difficulty in most of the courses was medium. The course was a mix of both theoretical and practical as well.
- I studied economics, so the most positive part of the course was the macroeconomics part of the course which interested me a lot.
- I could not recall anything negative about the course.
Admission Experience
-
I Initially applied to Northern Kentucky University(NKU) and studied 2 years there and then took a transfer to University of Kentucky. I only applied to (NKU). Then i took a transfer to University of Kentucky after 2 years. So, I only applied to NKU and the University of Kentucky.
-
NKU and university of kentucky. No, i didnt receive any rejections
-
I didn't got rejected. But i think one possible reason can be scores. The reason i opted it:-
1.This college was near to my brother's house so i applied to this college only.
2.The application process was quite simple. You just fill the application form online, submit all the required documents and received the admission letter.
3.You need SAT and IELTS for Bachelors degree. IELTS is 6.0 bands and SAT i think is not mandatory for bachelors degree
4.Overall admission experience was awesome and I didn't have any challenges -
I applied for Fall intake. I completed 2 years in NKU and wanted to start my third year in University of Kentucky in Fall 14 as I don't wanted to waste a semester.
-
The admission process was about 2 month in total. I applied in Mar-14 and submitted all my documents with the application. There was no interview at my time. So i just got the admission letter and i-20 in June 14. I already had the visa as i was studying in NKU at that time. So, the total timeline would be 6 months from the start of the semester
Class Schedule
- The students can enroll themselves or with a help of a advisor. Usually a typical day would have 2-3 classes.
- The average student would be 20-30. But, in gen ed courses, it could a couple hundred
Faculty
- In gen ed courses, i would be higher but i am not sure about it. In my core economics, it was about 1:10. The lesser the ratio the better for the student as it would be more engaging with the professor
- The teaching methodology was different for every professor. But, overall it was great. Yes,it would help to secure a job.
- Yes, professors help to get part-time jobs
- My favourite professor is Dr. Robert Gillette of Macroecomics. His teaching styles were great as it was very engaging, helping students to get interested in the course.
Campus Life
- I believe we only have one main campus in Lexington.
- Every facility is available on the campus. You name it and its there.
- The basketball team of the college was famous. So, whenever we had a game day, the students just went on streets to cheer and enjoy.
Part Time Jobs
- The TA, RA is for graduate students. So, all the people i knew in graduate programmes had TA/RA roles.
- The pay is about 1500-200 a month for these positions.
- There are plenty of options to work on campus. The usual hourly wages were 10-15 USD per hour.
- The maximum hours of work is 20.
- Its not that hard to find a job. There is a dedicated job portal to find jobs on campus
- The minimum wage is 7.25 USD. So you can earn anything between 7.25 - 12 USD per hour. 2. Its not that hard to secure a part time job.
- The usual process would be to go on the job portal of the campus. Its like any other platform where you create a profile, upload your resume and apply for jobs. Once you apply, you get a interview call and thats its. Its just like a normal hiring process
Placement
- To be honest, I am sure about the employment as i came back to India due to family reasons. But there are many career fairs which you can go to.
- The average salary in the region is 70-80K per annum. Lexington is a tier 3 city, so cost of living is average.
- The best way to get a job is to go to a career fair. You meet the potential employers, pitch yourself. Then you have the online job portals to apply for.
- One of my friend got a job in an insurance company from a career fair only.
- EY, Bank of America, BNY, Deloitte etc
Accommodation
- I used online platforms to check the accommodation near my college.
- My monthly rent was 600 USD and it was a fully furnished apartment with 4 rooms. I had 1 room in it. It had the furniture, microwave, laundry.
- I think the biggest challenge is the room mates. These accommodations will match you with other people as per the selections you have made in the application.
- I would suggest to live 1 year in a dorm, make friends and then rent out an apartment.
5. - It was 1.5km from my colleges. Most indian students live in apartments with other indian students
Exams
- Generally, for a Bachelors degree, you need an aptitude test and a english proficiency test. I gave SAT and IELTS. You can either go for IELTS/TOEFL and SAT.
- You will be needing your transcripts from high school or previous college. The transcripts of IELTS/SAT, Statement of purpose, bank statement/sponsorship letter and passport copy
- Interview was not part of my application process
Events
- There were many cultural events. for indian students, the main event was Diwali and Holi.
- As there are students from different backgrounds, so they celebrate there own festivals as well
Fees
- The tuition fee is about 17k per semester or 1.4k per credit hour. You need atleast 16 credit hours to be enrolled as a full time student. Additional insurance charges would be 3k USD per annum.
- The fees was charged semester wise
- Monthly charges would be a minimum of 1.5k USD and it includes, rent, food, transportation. This is the basic cost and it totally depends how you live
Scholarship
- Yes, i received a scholarship. The name of the scholarship is William C Parker. As i was a transfer student from another university, the only criteria was the scores from previous university.
- The award amount was 5k USD for 1 year.
- I am not sure about it as there are different students in mostly every class
- I am also not sure about this.
