What Students Say
Likes
- I received good reviews from my seniors at the university and also because for the scope of research and how cost effective the education was in Germany.
- Located in a quaint little city, It offered a pleasant living experience with multicultural and enriching academic environment. Many master's a programs at the University of Bonn are offered in English, increasing accessibility for international students like me. I found it really helpful that the university provided support services like orientation programs, language courses, and assistance with administrative processes when I started. The research institutes are well funded and the Professors are very approachable and supportive. The city is well connected with transport system and it was easier to commute.
Dislikes
- Majority of university related news will be communicated in German only. That was a little hard for me especially at the beginning. Germany itself is not very digital oriented. So still the university uses fax and paper communication which I found very taxing and time consuming.
Required Exams for Admission
It was a positive experience for me. The way research can be carried out independently in excellent infrastructure really helped me. Of course, I gained a lot of exposure while being a part of an esteemed university like that in Bonn.
Course Curriculum
The curriculum was very diverse and covered many topics. As for techniques, many modern technologies could have been included especially in the labs. Students are free to apply for internships and I had opportunities to work in different research labs.
Faculty
Overall the course had 20-22 students. The limit for lab courses were 6-10 and it was divided into groups of 2-3 with a supervisor.
Campus Life
The campus is always busy with some events. There were summer festivals and carnivals (depends on city culture). The library is well equipped and ideal for studying. Every University building has WiFi.
Placement
After graduating, students have to look jobs on their own. I was offered a PhD position in the lab that I did my masters thesis. I was paid approx 23000 euros per year.
Accommodation
I stayed in student dorm. The rent was subsided with free electricity, wifi, furnished apartment. I had a private room and kitchen and toilet was shared with 3 other students.
Exams
I took only IELTS exam once and my score was 8/9. I gave the exam on Feb 2016 and enrolled in the following winter semester on Oct 2016. Most important- why you want to pursue higher education? Why did you opt for that particular university and why that country in general? How that degree would help you in the future? What are your strong points- e.g good academic record Good LORs from your previous professors is important.
Fees
There was no tuition fees as its common in German public universities. I paid semester fees of approximately 250-300 euros twice a year.
