What Students Say?

- I love the teaching methodology followed and the fact that it is the only university that provides this unique program in a face-to-face setting! The professors are really knowledgeable and helpful too.
- It was the only university across the globe that offered this program and that too in a face to face setting.
Dislikes
- My university has three campuses with the one in Burnaby being the biggest and oldest. My classes are held at Surrey Campus, so I chose to stay close to it, however, I find that most of the events take place at Burnaby only.
It's been different from how we learn in India, there are research papers to read and that's where you absorb all your learning from. You may take a week or two to get used to it, but it's quite helpful. Just make sure you read smart or it'll take up a lot of your time. It's one of the best universities! Staff is ever helpful and looking forward to give you the support and nudge required at any point of time.
Course Curriculum
So far, I find the course syllabus to be quite aligned with the industry standards and requirements. I have the option to switch to an MA program wherein I'll be doing research, however, my current M.Ed program doesn't have a research component.
Exams
My IELTS score was Band 8 and my overall score across 3 degrees that I previously held from my home country, was around 70%. I am guessing that was less (the requirement was around 75%) and so I received a conditional offer letter. I need to achieve more than 75% in the first 2 semesters in order to be eligible to continue. But that seems to be easy.
Placement
I'm not quite sure about this one, but most of the people I've talked to mentioned that the placement rate is high and it's a renowned university, if you working hard enough you will land into a good workplace.
Fees
It's about 2000 CAD per semester but with the miscellaneous charges, it adds up to to 2500 CAD. But it's different for all programs. Mine isn't a unit based program.
Examination Structure
I had to submit 3 LORS, 2 academic and 1 professional. I did upload my CV as well, though it was optional. My SOP had the points that were mentioned on the program page. Why do you want to study educational technology and learning design (ETLD)? What has brought you to this field of study? What issues/questions do you find most interesting/intriguing about ETLD? Describe how your past academic studies and work experiences have prepared you to pursue advanced studies in the field of ETLD? Describe your future career path and how the ETLD program will contribute to it. Choose one educational technology that is or could be used in education. Discuss the benefits and challenges associated with this technology. With which of our faculty members do you plan to work? Describe the fit between your interests, and those of the faculty member(s) you identify. Examine our research profiles. (MA applicants only) Attach a list of your publications, unpublished seminar(s) and conference presentation(s). Apart from that i gave Transcripts for each post-secondary institution attended and Academic Writing Sample (my research paper from previous degree that was less than 5 years old)
Faculty
The classes are pretty small, the ratio is about 1:15. So we have more opportunities to participate in class discussions. The faculty and staff are quite supportive. The professors are knowledgeable and pretty up to date. Dr. John Nesbit, my professor for the EDUC 892 course, Cognitive Tools and Multimedia Learning, has been quite helpful! He's actively helping me find a job on campus that suits my needs and I am grateful to him for all his help.
Campus Life
Campus life is quite happening. But, most of the events take place in Burnaby, which is far from here and a big drawback. The Surrey campus is within a mall so it's quite lively! There are options for students to enroll in extracurricular activities, you even get extracurricular credits for that. There are games in the mezzanine area almost every day. There's free wi-fi and a library in all the campuses.
Hostel
On campus accommodation was quite expensive and available only in Burnaby. But I found a website on the university's portal it's called places4students, it's affiliated with the university and i was lucky to find a very cheap place within 2 kilometers. I'm paying 550 CAD for a private room in a townhouse. It's all inclusive, there's laundry, utensils, bed, table chair, heating electricity, water, everything's included.
